All week, the Obama administration bent over backwards to avoid questioning the legitimacy of the Iranian regime. In this, Obama became a de facto ally of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Although Obama finally spoke about the protesters--"the whole world is watching," he said--he never expressed real support for them.
Obama supporters defended his silence. Anything he said to endorse the protests, they argued, would taint the protesters' message and damage their cause.
Remember these "words" by obama 2 short weeks ago;
Quote:
Obama had promised in Cairo, in his address to the Muslim world, a "new beginning" in U.S.-Muslim relations. He spoke of his belief in democracy and of his "unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn't steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose."
Those are not just American ideas, he said, but universal human rights. "And that is why we will support them everywhere."
Is there not a clearer example of just how empty his words really are. He does quite well is "saying" are the right things, but when it comes to action, he has not a clue what he is doing.
He said little before the violence erupted because to say anything forceful would have been ammunition for the regime.
And look what happened. The regime blamed the US for interfering anyway, as everyone knew they would. So obviously they didn't need that "ammunition" to start beating and killing people, did they?
Quote:
He wasn't "forced" to do anything.
He absolutely was forced - the world had noticed what a weak, embarrassing statement his first attempt was.
To some, the week in review could read, "Obama wisely keeps the hell out of the other countries' business and lets the Iranian protesters show what they are made of in their personal chase for fair representation in the supposed democratic election. Congressman Ron Paul actually agrees with Obama on this one, and shows it in a very respectable one-man vote against a knee-jerk politically weak congress."
Oh, delu. This is a sad day - you are really going to spread the propaganda of the Iranian mullahs and killers?
Why do you think obama came out today with another statement? He was basically forced to tell everyone exactly whose side he is on - no one could tell based on his previous silence and weak statement.
Im pointing out that that's what the Iranian mullahs and killers would love the US to give them. If he says or does anything strong they'll jump on that to say the west incited all this trouble against "us" - to let the protesters keep their lives and pull them back into the fold, united in (at least a public) the comfortable old suspicion and resentment against the US.
And look what happened. The regime blamed the US for interfering anyway, as everyone knew they would. So obviously they didn't need that "ammunition" to start beating and killing people, did they?

No, actually, they're blaming the UK. They know that blaming the U.S. won't work: Iranians are supportive of Obama, and have received much information from Iranian-Americans via Twitter, etc.
He wasn't "forced," sanrene. I'm sorry, but the world "noticed" nothing about "what a weak, embarrassing statement his first attempt was." That's your opinion. It is not the same as the world's.
^ gotta admire the never ending fountain of excuses
