It does make sense, but keep in mind that not all gays say they want to be just like everybody else, and of those who do, I would guess that a large number of them don't attend those events. Even 20 years ago, I'd say that only about half the gay community would come out for those parades; I would guess that the percentage has gone down over the years. In part, that's what has allowed the more fringe elements to stand out and get attention.
Here's my statement: Gays are NOT just like everybody else. Their life experiences are often different from non-gays. With the preferences that society gives to heterosexuality, to me, there's almost no way that a homosexual can grow up to feel completely normal. It can be a constant psychological battle.
I know that gays have very different experiences but really the only difference between gays and heteros is in the bedroom. I think very outspoken gays that attempt IMO to push it in others faces are a huge reason many have a negative opinion of gays. It all comes down to respect. I will respect you and your lifestyle if you respect mine. I understand that it is extremely hard for gay in many areas but "pushing" it is not the answer. I am not saying hide the fact that you are gay but it should not be the focal point of your life. I am a heterosexual woman but that is not who I am if that makes sense. I have never personally met an "in your face" gay person all of the gays I know are very low key in that area. They don't hide but they don't publicize it either. I truly fell badly for gays because it can not be easy to live in a world where people look at you like you are different. As I said in my eyes the only difference is in the bedroom and we should stay out of each others bedrooms.

That's all great, but impressions do matter, and the impression that many have is a negative one. They think about the nudity and what they see as freakish or overly sexual behavior.
They are always good for interesting b-roll to shoot for the evening news. And you can always get a few off-the-cuff interview from some of the most interesting and terrifying people (by appearance, not in a physical threating sense).
But they are fun to go and watch and most are fun people. Family friendly.
