They didn't. They used the Common law definition of natural born subjects/ citizens.

As previously stated, it's called dual citizenship, and several other presidents have had it.
That is because British law allowed it, and the US allows one to have dual, triple or as many citizenship. Doesn't affect, however, the natural born citizenship status of a US citizen.
