get cavalier comments from people who have yet to pause and consider what would it be like to be in that devastation and amidst all of the death.
A Bible is great comfort, but it can't be eaten, used for shelter, cannot save you from being raped, quench your dehydration or prevent the diseases that generally follow such catastrophes. That is the OP's point, I believe. There doesn't seem to be a need for rabid attacks at such a time.
I think you may not understand how powerful the bible is for some people who found themselves in tragic situations similar to Haiti. Hearts and minds devastated, Americans traditionally seek counsel from clergy. It's not inappropriate, it's the salve/ balm they know works for them. Please do not rush to judge.
In fairness to donors, not all of us have accounts with medical supply companies, nor is world population aware of emergency response priority need. Average people not in emergency response careers do what they can, as they can, to the degree of their ability & resources. Some crazy california lady drove her hummer to New Orleans, and bless her heart for doing so. Complaining at her for failing to provide all that was needed is foolish.
Post 911 outpouring of support with materials- fleets of tractor trailers showing up from grass roots help-- wasn't always useful on the ground, but I was incredibly moved by that grass roots reminder of who we are as a nation. That for me was the greatest salve/balm my heart and mind needed to pick myself up. I'll never forget that goodwill for the rest of life.
Waving dollars at me when my world is thrown in chaos, my fellow man is under a pile that was WTC would not be helpful to me in any way. See?
If you were in WTC no amount of money, or a bible would be helpful to you. However, if you did somehow survive the collapse and were trapped under rubble it would take man power and machinery to save you, which cost money. A bible might provide you comfort while you died, but it won't save your life unless God magically teleports you to safety or levitates the rubble. While possible its very improbably that this would happen. After you were saved you would probably want food, water, and medical treatment. Not saying you wouldn't want a bible too, but I would want it to compliment the food/water/medicine, and not as a substitute.

Yes, and those giving Bibles are also giving tax dollars at the same time. So, I don't understand the complaint. It's no shirt off his back. Why start a thread about it, except to bash Christianity again.
Those who are believers draw great strength and spiritual sustenance from their faith. Why make that a target?
