Because the south left the party for the most part after years of being a firm base .One only has to look to see Democratic party is more confined to large cities and the NE now days.
I don't think it's necessarily a hate, so much as a questioning of pride. For example, the southern states generally perform poorly in academics, economy (Texas is doing well, we know, and you can have it.), social justice, and progress in the equal rights/treatment of the LGBT issue of our day. Additionally, southern states insist on making "creationism" a science, which looks really dumb in our states.
Most of these things are okay (certainly not preferred and reflected in property values), but the denial of science and equal treatment/rights of gay people make my circle squirm. That's shameful to us.
I am originally from Wisconsin, a liberal who lived in super Republican Texas for many years. I don't hate the South, but one only has to watch the news to see which states lag in education and are the poorest--most of the South. Only a couple of days ago a Southern state made abortion illegal after 12 weeks. Wisconsin has many religious folks--mainly Lutherans and Catholics--but most of them don't spend their time trying to convert you and denying science.
I also find it ironic that the super red states of the South, which are so poverty stricken, receive much more federal aid, food stamps, welfare, etc. than the blue states of the wealthier Northeast and yet they continually vote for Republicans.
I love the South. Grew up here, lived around the country in my 20s to make sure it was 'home', and came back here to stay. Only problem I have is that so many people are moving here that I fear it will lose its regional identity, part of what makes the South such a wonderful place to live. When I read these types of threads and see the criticisms against the South, it tells me one thing. Those people have never actually been to the South. The South, as portrayed by Hollywood, is NOT reality.
Texas is so big that it really depends where you are. Hill country is pretty nice but in general I prefer more greenery. I always found the middle part of Alabama to be a bit dull but parts of southern Alabama and the very northern part are quite beautiful. One of my favorite towns, Eufaula, is in AL. Really a beautiful, small, historic town. Born and raised in south Georgia. Loved it there but I must admit I love being in the Lowcountry here in SC more.
Birmingham is beautiful and has a lot of stunning golf courses.
Well, for the most part, the dominant white southern culture doesn't believe in government, so unfortunately what you point out is never, ever going to change. They do believe in god though.
Warning! Closed minded ignorance exposed in the above post!
