Hey guys, i'll be moving to Portland this monday and i'd like to spend the day outdoors, getting to know the city and it's people. Where should I go to find this? I'm originally from D.C. and I have never been to the west coast before, thanks...

Pioneer Square is nicknamed "Portland's Living Room," lots of people hang out there. I would also suggest checking out any of the food cart pods. You'll meet a pretty good cross section of Portland's residents.

Waterfront Park, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, walk along NW 23rd (lots of people hang out at curb-side tables).

You might want to look for a festival of some sort. I see only two going on in Portland:

Art in the Pearl
There's a big Labor Day picnic at Oaks Park (10am-5pm).

Or, just get out into the neighborhoods. Hard to say how busy you'll find them, lots of places might be closed because of the holiday. Prime neighborhoods for browsing are: NW 23rd, Alberta Arts, Hawthorne, Sellwood (if you're into antiques)

A group like MeetUp is good for newcomers. They have some small events, it looks like,
on Monday. One might suit your interests.

Take a city tour on something like the Big Pink Bus (a hop on/off bus), or take a walking tour.

I hope your move went/is going well! I don't have any suggestions for getting to know the city and its people in a day, but I do have some thoughts on making friends in a new city. My husband and I moved here four months ago, and we tried the new in town Meetups. We met nice people, but didn't feel like we had a real chance to make a connection. What has been working much better is joining hobby groups and attending them on a regular basis. You already have something in common with people there (your shared hobby) and you get a chance to see each other again and and again and start to form real bonds.

Go to Powell Books and buy a cup of coffee. Maybe Portland's most famous landmark (I've run into more people who brought it up). I also liked watching the foot traffic going by.

+1 Also, rent a bike. But really, coming from DC, everything will be so different that you'll get a feel for the city by walking around pretty much anywhere and popping into the occasional establishment. Night and day.

Walking around downtown is interesting and good exercise. Always seems like you're walking uphill. Not like from the waterfront in Seattle, more gently.
