There is a difference between still solid and worth a huge contract. I'm not saying I agree with every move they make, but you can't be competitive year after year by overpaying aging veterans.

Lloyd played exactly one season after he left the Steelers and was injured a few times late in his career. You just can't pay guys like that a lot of money.

I'm not one to put my stock in preseason, but the first team offense has been rocking the last two games. I'm wondering if this is going to be a record year for Big Ben and the offense.

Pouncy was hurt tonight. Please god don't let it be serious. I hope he doesn't end up being injury prone.
EDIT: Looks like Pouncey is going to be OK. But Leftwich broke his arm. Heading to IR.

Lloyd was on the downside. Kevin Greene wanted more than the Steelers were willing to pay for what they felt he was worth, and Gildon (all time Steelers sack leader) was waiting in the wings. Woodson wanted corner money. The Steelers knew he needed to move to safety & offered him safety money. He declined.
People also need to remember the Rooneys are one of the few owners who's primary business is football. They don't own Home Depot or Gillette or anything like that. Not as easy to pay those big signing bonuses that are delivered up front & then prorated over the contract.
They've won more division titles than any team since the merger. Win the division & you're in the playoffs guaranteed. They've won more Super Bowl titles than any team. I have no beef with how they do business. They're smart with their money. That's not cheap...it's good business on and off the field.

Woodson was the best at his position that we ever had. We should have paid him longterm.

I think Mel Blount might have an argument there...the NFL changed rules because of him.
As for signing him, no we shouldn't have. He moved to safety after leaving Pittsburgh. That's what the Steelers wanted him to do and he refused...then moved to safety for other teams. He played safety for the 49ers, Ravens & Raiders but refused to do so for the team that drafted him. There were also issues fitting his demands under the salary cap & he wouldn't budge on his demands.
I love what Woodson did in his time here and I don't hold it against him anymore, but his leaving was of his doing. His ego wouldn't accept reality. Rod was an amazing athlete, but he had a tremendous ego that often got in the way of doing business. Remember that he held out as a rookie. And it was a LONG holdout.

I remember that! I also remember being at a game and Steeler Nation booed when he ran out on the field at the beginning. I don't remember who he was playing for then...I think it was the 49ers.

I'd have to check the schedules from back then to know for sure. I'm sure he was booed plenty as a Raven & Raider though.
A buddy and I went to Pittsburgh in '98 for a MNF game against the visiting Packers (Steelers won a great game!) and people there weren't too happy with Rod. One of our cabbies referred to him as Benedict Arnold lol. Dude was practically foaming at the mouth he was still so angry about it!

There are quite a few Pittsburghers who still are angry with Woodson after all these years. They do consider him a traitor. There were some bad feelings towards Bradshaw also, because he had badmouthed Pittsburgh. I think most people have gotten over that one though.
