Default Constant construction leaves Port Charlotte residents weary

May 05, 2016

Lots of dirt. Loud noise. Damage to their homes.

They're among the complaints of Port Charlotte residents who live near construction projects that keep going on and on.

Kerrie Fancher, for one, is over the constant noise and rumbling.

"Steamrollers have broken a glass in my cabinet," the Edgewater Drive resident said. "Shattered a glass pane in my china cabinet."

Then there's the dirt.

Neighbors say they can't keep their homes clean.

"We've had the air conditioning on since January because of the dirt that is coming into the house," said Bill Lamenia, who lives a block away. "The pool is filthy all the time, too."

That's been the life for many around the Edgewater widening project, which, like many other Charlotte County projects, is behind schedule.

"It's been very trying. The house is always dirty," Fancher said. "There's no way to get away from the dirt."

Many of these projects were supposed to be wrapped up by now -- or at least soon -- but have been held up by contract disputes. All the winter rain slowed down workers, too.

The county is aware of complaints and is addressing them individually.

Neighbors hope their trouble is worth it in the end.

"The sooner they get it done," Lamenia said, "the better we will all be.

The fact that they could drive it without drilling shows just how soft the soils are.

Using the Google Maps distance calculator, I'm a little over 2 1/4 miles, as the bird flies, from the bridge near Sunrise Park and I can hear the pile driver pounding away as I type this. I'd hate to live next door!

they started driving at 7:30 am they had all 4 pilling down after lunch.
what I don't understand is with the first pilling they did in the water it was higher then the old pillings and the bridge is supposed to be 2 1/2' higher

but then a few days later they drove it down a few more feet lower then the original pillings ? what the heck?

They can put forms on top of the pilings, pour an additional height onto the pier if necessary.
