Don't know about keeping them away, but a 12 gauge prevents them from coming back. Just be careful where you step and put your hands. At night, be very careful, especially on your porch, steps, and sidewalk.
If you live in the burbs and like to take a walk at night, be extraordinarily careful. This time of year, those guys love to crawl out on the warm pavement, as the evening cools down.
Maine has no poisonous snakes - but horrific winters..... I hate ANY kind of snake no matter how big or small and have a policy "the only good snake is a dead snake and dead REPEATEDLY!"
It's illegal to discharge a firearm in our cities. I would rather live with the snakes then the mice that will over populate if u remove their predator's. I'm deathly afraid of snakes but I let them live so they control the mice and you shouldn't kill anything unless your going to eat it.
a landscaper once commended me on planting mint around my deck as a snake deterrent. That wasn't intentional - I planted mint in one spot and it went wild (as it will). I looked it up and some folks do say that mint will keep it away. We also have a dog and cats.

Tornados and snakes are not going to stop me from moving to NC!
I wouldn't let it hold you back either. In my 60 years of living in the Triangle we've had two hurricanes, a hand full of tornados, and amazingly no snake bites myself considering the places I've walked in or stuck my hands
The boots are a great idea. I've kept a fresh pair like these handy for as long as I can remember.
Moth balls has the same ingredients as product snake away and cheaper and can be use for other needs, just a suggestion.
