In fact, one just popped moments ago. Maybe the power system just can't keep up with the growth around here. It's not that warm out right now, either, so air conditioners aren't blasting.

One of the people posting above said they heard it near the intersection of Creedmoor rd and Hwy 98 and when I look on Google Maps (click to take a look) - there is a transmission line just a little south of that intersection and just a little north of where Mt Vernon church road crosses Creedmoor rd. You can see the line because they clear cut all the land underneath the lines and around the towers.
Of course this is just a theory of mine, and I'll be the first to admit its got some holes in it - but if you are hearing these "booms," I would check google maps and see if there are high tension power lines nearby.
Yes, those lines do run just a mile or so north of my home. And I'll plead ignorant to that theory, never heard of that before. It's a new one to me.
As to saying it sounded like it was coming from the intersection of Creedmoor and 98, that's just a general observation....it did SEEM to be coming from north of here. HERE being near the Upper Barton Creek boat ramp on Falls Lake.
I know it's turkey season, but even turkey loads don't sound that loud and that distant. I've shot enough shotguns to know how they sound. Their sound doesn't carry THAT far.
Haven't heard the booms again since Saturday. It was probably between 6 and 7pm that evening.
they do have spring weekend camps, however, it looks like they don't start until April 20th. Maybe they rent it out for other functions in the spring? OP, you could call and ask if they shot the cannon that night around that time!
He says there is no cannon at Kanata. But they have brought in someone in summers past to make things go boom with blackpowder. But Kanata wasn't even open this past Saturday so it wasn't them.
