Exactly the kind of place we were looking for! Thanks!

But that's hardly off the beaten path — there's a TV show about it!!

Do you have any other places on your list yet? A good place to start is with the restaurants of the James Beard award-winning chefs in the area — Lantern, Crook's Corner, Poole's, etc.

You may also like Speckled Hen or Chef's Pallette as well.

I've not been to, but hear consistently great things about:
Standard Food
Stanbury Stanbury

I really like Bida Manda in Raleigh, although it's been a while: Bida Manda | Laotian Restaurant and Bar

Someone already mentioned Saxapahaw General Store. I love that place. Based on your response, it may be a better stop for lunch (save a nicer place for dinner), but it's good and unique. If you like live music, see if anyone interesting is playing at Haw River Ballroom (same location), really great venue, and a nice night to go to the general store and a show.

Also for lunch: if you want something a bit divey, but really good, I like "the Federal" in Durham.

^Both have outside seating for a nice afternoon.

So far, after extensive research, we wanted to try Johnson's Family BBQ, Stanbury, Nashers, Beasleys, Motto and Nanas. Taste is now added to that as well.

Its an hour and half from Raleigh. If you go, hit the Boiler Room Oyster Bar too...same ownership as Chef and Farmer.

Bida Manda
Royale
Death & Taxes
Whiskey Kitchen
Taste
The Oak
More

ETA... these are not. "Off the beaten path" but they are really good!

Johnson's Family BBQ and Stanbury are definitely worth a visit (2 opposite ends of the dining spectrum - gas station BBQ and higher end tapas)

I'll never forget my first visit. I wanted Mac & Cheese, however the cashier warned me it was no good that day. Didn't expect to hear that, but I appreciated it.
