My husband and I (retirees) are planning a move from Florida (which we've found is just too hot and buggy) to North Carolina. We have visited and liked the over 55 communities in both the Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham areas and are can't decide between the two. Would like some thoughts on pros and cons of retiring to either of these areas.

IF I was interested in a 55+, I would check closely the easy access to daily needs like retail and services, and medical facilities.
Either area should provide those things, but not all 55+ communities are equal in location and access.
Perhaps more importantly with UNC and Duke health systems; that tends to be favorable for retirees.
But yes the temperature reached 100 degrees last week. Granted that's out of the ordinary but is is still worth noting that it is very hot here during the summer as well. Probably just as much if not more-so than Florida. When it isn't record shattering heat-waves to start October; the Fall and Spring are the "Sweet spot" of NC weather.
I moved here from south FL and feel like Raleigh’s climate is a relief from the oppressive heat and humidity of FL. I can appreciate a hot, humid summer if I also have fall, winter, and spring to enjoy. A neighborhood with a tree canopy also makes a big difference.
As for deciding between Raleigh and Charlotte, distance from the beach is a major factor for me.

I'd say neither one... that these are places to retire FROM... not to.
The one exception is if you have close family, friends and a social circle nearby one or the other.
Where were you before going to FL?
Have you explored "reverse sno-birding" ... where you travel north for the hot/hottest months?
