Saw this area pop up in some of my searches and wondering how retiree friendly it is? Is it too far from most areas (shopping? groceries? activities?). No into boating or golf but like to be in an area that has nature, etc.

Apparently, Lake Royale is improving. It used to be seen mainly as a cheap place to put a camping trailer. But there are builders putting in spec houses in the range of $340-400K, although the rundown campers are still there.
The main concern I would have is the distance from doctors. One would have to go to Louisburg or Zebulon for a family doctor, and probably to Wake Forest for a specialist. I did note that the community advertises a private police force and it has a helicopter pad if one had to be evacuated for emergencies.
I think a healthy, self-reliant retiree would be OK there, but not someone with risky health.

Regarding shopping and amusements, Bunn has the basics: a Food Lion, convenience stores, hardware and lumber, a country restaurant and several others, a small library. It has a very nice quilt shop if someone sews. These are about a 10 minute drive. Louisburg has more options about 15-20 minutes away. Lake Royale also has a convenience store within the gates. One can order specialized stuff from Amazon. There appear to be bocce courts and a putt-putt course for low-key sports. I would say the amenities are more than adequate for someone who does not require constant entertainment.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Looks like there are some new homes being built like was mentioned. But really not sure if this is the right fit for my wife and I. We have a good friend who lives south of Zebulon and may just end up looking there.
Hello,
are there any residents of Lake Royale that can provide some information on the community ?
We are from Florida and we are looking to move north and Lake Royale popped up on our search
I love the semi-wooded areas of the homes and would like to enjoy change of seasons.
Does anyone know if there are any dangers of snakes we must be carful of ? specially in the water ?
What is the best area of the lake to live in ?What is it like to live there ? Any other Pros or mostly Cons ?
Since my last posting in 2022, I notice that D.R. Horton is planning to build homes near Lake Royale, presumably sharing the amenities. Since Horton has discovered it, there may be some loss of the woodsy privacy. Horton is one of my least favorite builders.

Hi Mary,
The Raleigh-Durham area is beautiful and growing fast. It's quite sophisticated, though not nearly on the level of posh areas of Florida.
With Apple building an Austin-sized campus in RTP, the area is set to become increasingly expensive and possibly a future East coast Silicon Valley-esque place.
That said, Franklin County including Lake Royale doesn't yet share any of the sophistication of Raleigh or Wake County.
Franklin County folks shop at Walmart for practically all their home furnishings, and Lake Royale is jokingly referred to as the "RedNe*k Riviera." The lake is small and shallow but you can water ski on it.
I'm a native of the county. It's growing and one day may be similar to the rest of the Triangle area, but currently it is a world away. Half of the locals like it that way, and it's very rural in character.
Come visit the entire area, and you may not agree with anything I said. Good luck to you!
We had a lot with our camper on it for a short time at Lake Royale. We lived in Zebulon and thought it would make a nice place for a weekend/vacation getaway. It depends on what you are looking for in a community. They do have their own police force. The POA is pretty strict. There are some neat amenities with the putt putt course, outdoor workout area, pool, a few marinas and a beach. But it ended up not being the place for us. Maybe because we were on the camper side. Maybe because it's a pretty closed community (gated and all).
Thank you for the link, but they did not talk about snakes in Lake Royale. Does Lake Jordan have snakes in the water ?
I assume since you are a veteran of the area you might have gone there or heard. I love the water.
My intention is to have my grandkids visit and the idea that there is danger in the water concerns me.
I'm originally from California and left that concrete jungle 30 yrs ago to live in Florida. We are retiring in 5 years and though now would be the time to look in an area where it's more central and has beautiful landscapes, lakes etc. I noticed that the new builds in the Raleigh area have the California mentality of building so close to each other and tearing down your beautiful trees.
It just makes me sad when I zoom in and see the land stripped. We don't mind a retirement community but don't want to be in a young family neighborhood where the homes all have 5 bedrooms. We are looking to connect with people, have a home nestled in your beautiful trees and serve the community is the best way possible. Lake Royale came across and seemed to fit most boxes and I came across a very old comment of snakes in the lake and scared me. Please lmk if this is normal for your lakes ? Yes Florida everglades has Boa constrictors, the state pays to have them removed, but the Everglades is not a family place and yes we have alligators in the brackish waters ....cool to look at but we only kayak there. We have beautiful swimming springs. For same reason Reservoirs attracted me as I thought they were free from any danger. ??
