Some families also view it as a benefit that they get to do family vacations during non-peak times of the year, so destinations are less crowded and rates may be lower.

It is beneficial to schools because it increases the school's student capacity by 25%, by using the school facility year-round instead of just 9 months of the year.
CHTransplant nailed it!

My son has been on YR since kindergarten, and we've had many great family vacations. There's nothing like having it your way at Florida's theme parks without fighting the heat and large crowds by going during the off peak season. I can understand how YR doesn't work well for some families, but no regrets here.

FVMommy made a great point. Some of the criticisms of the Wake County year round schedules is that it is multi-track, with kids all over the neighborhood tracking out at multiple times. In Durham County, it's single track.

We're in year round in Wake and find the schedule to be great for our family. We don't really have a set vacation time as working parents, so we're not wedded to long summer vacations for the kids. It's been great for our children, in that they visit grandparents and do camps in several seasons (we're track 1). We also don't have to worry about planning for a huge 12-week block of time, sometimes with multiple camps.

It really comes down to what your family needs and desires. (I'd also look to see if the year round offerings at the mentioned schools have higher performance outcomes. It's worth a look.)

Good luck!
