Linus, I had one amazing breakfast in NM with a green salsa or sauce that they poured over everything...seemed like an NM thing since I had never had it before...its was the best! Like a chow-chow thing...but different. Can't remember the name of it tho..do you know?
Why'd you have to go and mention chow chow? Now I'm salivating.
It wasn't a salasa verde (made with tomatillos), was it?
NewUser, I'm looking for #4 (as you describe it) as well! Please post when you find it.
Thank you!
P.S. #1-3 are not worthy the money, imo. I had much better Mexican in England, a place no one would think Mexican exists (and this was a distance from London).
Drive a few hours west to to eat at the best Mexican restaurant in the Southeastern United States. El Paso on Highway 25 near downtown Hendersonville. It's absolutely phenomenal. It's run by guys from Monterrey. The town is surrounded by apple orchards. So it was originally workers migrating there, followed by families, then entrepreneurs (shopkeepers, restaurateurs, etc). It's been cool...they started out 7 years ago as a hole in the wall with legit food and 32oz Dos Equis for cheap. They've been so successful, they now have 5 or 6 Western North Carolina locations.
Yeah, it seems like the experience can be mixed based on what people said on the Apex forums. Sauces are homemade at least, including salsa. I have to be honest and say I haven't gone because it looks a little scary from the outside. Maybe I'll go there this weekend since I have family coming to visit - safety in numbers!
It's actually not bad inside (you would never know from the way it looks on the outside). I really like their taco's (Taco Mexico), not crazy about their salsa/chips. The first time we went it was excellent, the 2nd time not so good...but, I'll still get a taco carry out every now & then.
One place I was told about (from someone on this board)---a gas station that sells mexican food--okay I know, it sounds crazy. I finally was over in the area the other day & thought I'd try it, but, it was so crowded that I didn't want to wait. I don't know the name but it was off Ten-Ten & US1 area inside, I believe a Citco (sp?) gas station w/ a steep drive.
I have no idea if his is clean or not, but I suspect he probably has it inspected. Doesn't scare me much anyway. I've eaten from a hut on the side of the road in rural India and lived to tell about it, LOL.
There is another Mexican guy (yes he's truly from Mexico before anyone bashes me) that has his own Ice Cream Truck around here and that truck is SPOTLESS. Probably way cleaner than the Dairy Queen up the street.
