I know there have been numerous threads with regard to the roadside trash we have in our surrounding areas. This thread isn't about complaining, whining, pointing fingers but trying to be part of the solution because we know there's a problem.

I helped the cycling club I'm a part of adopt a road (Purnell at New Light) as a part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation / Adopt-A-Highway program. It's just so easy. If you have a preferred road once you get the initial application you give them a few choices and they will let you know if that particular road is available. Next step is gathering signatures of people in your group that would want to be involved and that's about all you need to do. The DOT provides you with bags and reflective vests and you're committed to meeting as a group once a quarter to pick up trash.

So, again, if you're not a part of the solution you're part of the problem.
I would appeal to you to gather a group of people and adopt a highway.
You can ask your church, neighborhood, scouting, etc. etc.

So, let's do something about this because I'm sure like me you are SICK OF ALL THE TRASH.

our group is going out two Saturdays in February
February, 20th and 27th
We're meeting at New Light/Purnell Rd at the firestation at 2:00

I am going tofind out about the road by me,that looks like a dump.Great info.Now if the state would pitch in with the beltlines,capital blvd,combined with a bottle redemtion law,and massive fines that are actually enforced,we may get somewhere.

I'm sorry you are not getting more of a response. It just seems like the solution is sad when volunteers are picking up other people's trash

I wish the solution was more enforcement of littering fines. But law enforcement probably has bigger fish to fry.

This is something I'm not available to do. I have young children and not a lot of spare time. So I donate my time to other causes that I can do with them. I also don't know if I would feel completely safe picking up trash on the roadside -- even with an orange vest on.

We adopted part of a highway in California a few years ago. It was a very busy, 4-lanes each way freeway. It was pretty scary for about the first half hour. Like most things, you get used to it.

I've seen adopt-a-highway on smaller roads out here. That would work for those who want to help but are nervous about the traffic. (Still, no kids though.)

there are plenty of quieter roads - Purnell Road isn't too heavily traveled but boy, what a mess.

Preach it, sister! I also keep a little notebook in my car and report those throwing cigarettes out at the red lights to the Swat a Litterbug thing.

Focus People! We know there is a problem so we don't need to rehash just wanting to make a positive difference.

Cry884 - You Go Girl! Could you send me the link for reporting litter bugs? I have been known to siddle up to a driver that has just tossed a bud and remind them that the street is not their ashtray.
