Second Empire is great. That would be my first choice, Elaine's second. (Bin 54 has been disappointing lately.)

I agree with Second Empire. Suggest you go "upstairs" vs the tavern on the bottom level (which really isn't a tavern). Both are wonderful, but upstairs is very quiet and romantic. It's pricey, but will make for a memorable experience and delicious meal. The tavern is great, too, but noisier and not as intimate.

Try Casa Carbone or Casalinga in Raleigh for old school Italian in the triangle.

Interesting that no one has mentioned the Angus Barn - not Italian but a regular favourite for special ocasions. Like others I personally prefer the Second Empire.

maggiano's at southpoint has excellent cuisine, it is a chain and at times can be crowded, but every time we've been there DH and I have been pleased. Last time we had a great waiter... he was from scotland I believe. If you make your reservations early enough, you should be able to request an upstairs table... which is more in line for a romantic dinner.

Where do you live? Food wise, Nana's is best. Four Square is also very good, and is in a pretty cool old house, so it may be a little more romantic. Both in Durham, as that is where the majority of the best restaurants are located around here.
