I am possibly moving to RC this fall and was wondering if there are any areas I should avoid. I may buy a house but I also may rent if I don't find what I am looking for on my vacation there in 2 weeks. Any decent apartments, landlords or management companies that you could recommend would be appreciated.
Some would argue north rapid would be the area to avoid. However, that seems to be unfounded. As far as property management and realtors, I would avoid Kahler Property Management. That is my own opinion. No real firsthand experiences, co-workers and friends have, it wasn't favorable.
North Rapid is fine. In my two-year stint in Rapid I lived half of it in North Rapid. No problems, no issues. The other half I lived on Mt. Rushmore Rd. just south of downtown and that was hell only because of the traffic.
There are no "ghettos" or "slums" in RC. It's a nice town with some of the friendliest people I have ever met. I don't have experience with property managers. The two places I lived in town I found by word-of-mouth from friends.
I really appreciate your input. I just finished a 5 day stint in RC and LOVED it. The people were the nicest I have ever met and the city and surrounding area were beautiful. Loved the Firehouse!

It's a great town, isn't it? :-) I've lived in a half dozen states and numerous towns and Rapid City is up there as one of my favorite places. If I wasn't from Colorado and had my family here I would have never left. I still dream about going back.
Firehouse Brewing is great. Next time you get to the area again, or when you move there, check out Crow Peak Brewing in Spearfish. They are pretty awesome as well.
Trouble is with RC is the property taxes...very high there....as well as home prices
You're right about that. Home prices are comparable to a lot of places I've lived. I guess that would be relative to where you come from but taxes are high. I have a friend that bought a 1,400 square foot town house and pays a little over $3,000 a year in taxes. In comparison, my house in Colorado of the same size costs me just under $400 a year in taxes. We paid about the same amount for each. But SD doesn't have personal income tax while most states do. It's a give-and-take situation.

Everyone of his posts seemingly laments the property taxes here. We get it. Rapid city isn't for him.
No personal property tax and no income tax is the offset.

Yep. The ~$2,500 a year I save in property taxes in Colorado is about what I pay a year in income tax to the state. It balances out which is why I don't see why people complain.
The way I see it, property tax is more favorable because it generally goes back into the local community while income tax goes to the state. Oh, and the time saved only filing only one set of taxes. Regardless, SD and Rapid City are great places with a lot more going for them than many.
