For those of you who have been here a little longer than me - what's a good place around town to work out? I'm thinking about just doing the Y - any pros or cons to share with me? I haven't seen a lot of other options. Does anyone know of a great gym that might be tucked away on the side of town, that I haven't come across yet? I like somewhere with pretty flexible hours, and childcare is a plus, which is why I'm leaning towards the Y. But, I like to make informed decisions, so any input is appreciated.
Rapid City has several 24 Hour Fitness Centers that are available at anytime you want to work out. The Weight Room is downtown and I think it's pretty neat because it's in an old brick warehouse. They offer STOMP classses and other various classes like yoga, karate, and pilates. Fitness Plus is a popular one in Baken Park. Ab-Solute Fitness is off LaCrosse Street on the northside. Spa 80 For Women is downtown too. I think Rapid City has about 6 or 7 Curves too and they're spread throughout town.
The YMCA would probably be the only one with childcare so if that's important I'd choose that one. Rapid City's YMCA is HUGE and they will be expanding and building a parking ramp later this year.
No, the parking garage for the Y was cancelled. They didn't raise enough funds. But, thats okay, because I've got guaranteed parking from my job, which is very close by. I've heard of the weight room, I think they have a westside location also, and I pass the downtown location on my way to work everyday. Fitness plus creeps me out - I don't want to work out in an old grocery store with windows all the way across the front!! Not heard of Spa 80, I'll have to check into that one, too. Thanks for the tips!
It seems that the older gyms don't update the Cardio & strength training machines often enough, and depend on the older way of lifting "Free" weights" to accomplish a workout. In the 24 hour clubs popping up everywhere these new machines isolate a muscle or two with a specific machine. This has made it easy for me to get a great workout without the expensive trainer I needed before.

Rick, do you like the 24 hour gyms? I thought of joining the one on Sheridan Lake Road but I wasn't too sure how much they cost and how they worked. I had a trainer for a while and while I felt great and looked good I also was going broke!
Snap Fitness makes you do a year contract. Fitness Plus is allright except has a lot of right wing types who insist on having FOX news on at least 2 Tv's. The cardio machines face a group of TV sets instead of having individual machine mounted sets so you are stuck watching a lot of crap you don't want to during your cardio workout.
