$700-$1200 will get you a very nice apartment in Rapid City. Most of the nicer apartments are on the Westside and Southside which can be about a 10-15 minute drive from campus. Look at Harmony Heights, Carriage Green, Bridgewood, Corral Park, Homestead Gardens, and Sheridan Highlands. They're all really nice and they fit your price range.
You could also contact some property management companies in Rapid City and they can point you to some condos and townhouses. The rule of thumb for Rapid City is to avoid anything north of Omaha Street.
a good way of search is go to yahoo yellow pages, when you get location site, click on change location unless already on site you want, type in rapid city,sd. click on that then search apartments, property management, and maybe other words related. rapid city does have a very good bus service.
What about the apartments within walking distance of SDSM&T??
The only apartments within walking distance from SDSM&T are in big old houses that have been turned into apartments. The area around the campus isn't really all that impressive. In fact, it's only a few blocks from the jail and there's a railyard right across the street from the campus. It's in a pretty sketchy area. Luckily, most apartments are a 10 minutes drive to campus. There are also a lot of frats and sororities around the campus.
My son is a senior at SDSMT, he said that MANY students live in the apartments next to WalMart, LaCrosse Estates Apartments at 761 E Anamosa. It isn't within walking distance, but a direct route down LaCrosse St to campus. Make a right at the 4 way stop near the fairgrounds and you're there at MDU with campus across the street.
Check with student housing, they will be able to suggest reliable locations with good management.
Try networking through places like facebook, other SDSMT students can suggest other locations.
