When we moved in here the kids were little so we used the tub in the Master bath. During a remodel 10-12 years ago we removed it in favor of a large walk in shower. Now it's time for another remodel- the last one I'm sure before we sell to downsize sometime in the not so distant future- should we add the tub back in now? No room for separate tub and walk in shower so it will have to be a combo- how necessary is a tub in the master bath? (there is a tub in another bathroom- just not in the Master)
what age is the house? The house where I grew up was built in the 1970's and only has a shower in the master bath. I think if it was built in an era where tubs in the master weren't common, you might be ok. Just my opinion.
We heard the "it will hurt your resale" argument when we elected not to install a tub in our master. For a while we dropped the question of tub use into every conversation. Out of roughly 20 people only one said they loved the luxury of a long hot bath in a tub and actually used it on a regular basis. Everyone else was adamant that they'd love to forgo it -- but everyone knows it would hurt their resale!
Seems to me this "everybody knows...." is as suspect as everybody knowing the earth was flat in 1491 : )
So we now have more room in the master shower and some extra closet space and a tub in the second bathroom. My in-laws just purchased a 4 year old house with the same set-up and saw it as a plus.
If there is a bath somewhere else in the house, a larger shower is more desirable than having a bath/shower combo in the master bath if I had to chose between the two.
And I'm a wife who takes a bath every single night. And I'd still rather there was a large shower in the master. I can take my bath in another bathroom.
Master bathroom baths are only worth it if they are large enough for two people to have sex, but you can do that in a larger shower instead!
I think as long as you have a bathtub somewhere in the house, a shower is perfectly fine in the master. I'm currently renovating a 60's rancher and opted to do just that . . . shower/bath combo in shared bath and walk-in shower in master bath.
I love a bath and have a nice clawfoot but I'd be happy if I were buying a newer house with just a shower in the m bath if a tub was located elsewhere.
As much as I love my big Jucuzzi tub-which we do use quite often, a big shower where you are not knocking your elbows on the walls washing your hair in the master would be more appealing as long as there is another descent size tub somewhere in the house (not even Jacuzzi size, just big enough to soak in).

In a word, yes.
But, depending on the age of the home and how conducive the design of the house is, it may not matter. Another attribute will be comparables- other homes in the general vicinity and their current design (remodeling). The only way to know for sure is to ask several RE agents that work and know your area.
HGTV is not the all-knowing, bottom line. So, forget everything you think you've learned from there and trust your local agents.
