Has anyone on this website ever had any experience with moving a house (not a modular or manufactured home) to another location? I would be interested to know what your experience was, and whether it proved to be cost effective.

Good luck.

We tried to find someone who would move a 24X24 garage and you would have thought we were looking for someone to crap a pineapple.

Nobody knew *ANYTHING* about anything. Nobody did it, nobody knew anybody who could do it. Now, mind you, I live in the rural Missouri Ozarks where brainpower is not a common commodity. Nevertheless, we called people in the ENTIRE STATE (and Arkansas too), and could not find anyone who could move it or would move it.

I hope you have better luck.

It is done often in New England. I saw 3 houses being moved - one was moved several miles away. There is a lot to prepare for the move: the house itself must be in good enough shape that it can withstand the move; then the new location must be readied and, I guess, proper permits issued; then overhead wires must be moved, obviously involving telephone, electric, and cable companies.

The homes I knew of were historic, 3 stories.

There used to be a show on HGTV called Haulin House. It was about people moving their entire house. If you can find some episodes it might be informative.

Judging by your name, here are two house movers in Montana that showed up at the top of a simple Google search:

Abel Moving & Rigging Inc. - Home
Tamietti House Moving & Const. Inc.

These guys are in my home state - South Dakota - and are some of the best around:

Telkamp Housemoving, Inc. - Don't Ask What We Can Do, Tell Us What You Want Done!

Is it cost effective? In my experience yes, so long as you buy the place to be moved for the right price...that is, darn cheap. You'll have cracks and cosmetic issues to deal with, landscaping, and, obviously, the footings, foundation, and electrical and heating/cooling/plumbing reconnections.

I did a Google search for North Carolina and also found some.
Suggest you do a Google search and you will probably find one.

It was done long before we moved here, but we live in a house that was moved some 50 miles from where it was located in the city out to the country place. One thing - make sure your foundation is done right.

Most people that move houses out here move historic ones that they buy for $1. The seller otherwise will just bulldoze it so selling for $1 is a better deal for the sellers. We have two local investors that specialize in moving houses and I think they do well on them.
