What does a storm door cost? What is your insurance deductable?

It's not likely that the police are going to make a full scale investigation for something that cannot be proved and is rather insignificant in value, in the big picture.

Given this is a closed development, I would alert the HOA and determine if there have been other similar situations.

I would recommend against filing a claim for something trivial like a storm door. It is probably less than the deductible anyway.

I agree you should file a police report, report your thoughts and reasons why you think the seller stole the door. It may cause the police to contact the seller and ask questions. But again, just because the seller was sitting in a car, it's not evidence that he took the door off and put it in his car after you drove away.
I agree - and add one thing. A storm door is a fixture. Anything attached to the house is a fixture. So if you don't think you're getting enough action from the police, I'd contact my attorney and have him/her contact the sellers attorney to make inquiries.

We are talking about a storm door, here. There is no proof who took it or when.

Attorneys do not work for free.

I would never file an insurance claim for a storm door, but still......I would be ticked! I would absolutely call the seller (or have my realtor call them) and ask them directly (and firmly) if they took it. If they did, I would absolutely insist it be returned promptly. If they deny taking it, I would inform them that a police report was being filed and they should be expecting a call from an investigator. If nothing else, if they did take it they get to lie to the Police too which is a little more daunting than lying to me. If they didn't take it, they won't mind at all telling the police all they know.

How likely are the sellers to admit to anyone they took it, assuming they did.

Our prisons are full of hundreds of thousands of people who claim they were convicted of crimes they did not commit.

I'd be angry, but I agree that there's no way I'd file a homeowner's insurance claim for less than $2000. They database people who file claims, and if you have filed more than X of them in time period Y, or file certain types of claims like for black mold, then you can have real problems in terms of being one of the first dropped in a high risk state like Florida or finding a new policy when you move again. I know someone in Texas who had all kinds of problems finding insurance when she moved because she'd filed a black mold claim for a previous house.

Way to jump to conclusions. I think it's very unlikely that the seller drove off with a storm door, especially since the OP said they're also a real estate agent! Things like that do not help one's business.
