My favorite is Scottish oatmeal. I put plenty of butter in it, plus a little milk and either salt or stevia with cinnamon/nutmeg.

I cook a half cup of Country Choice organic old fashioned oatmeal in just under 1 cup water in a glass bowl. Microwave 2 1/2 minutes, add some ground up flaxseed for my omega 3 dose and eat. No need for sugar, honey or syrup. Monday to Friday at work I only have a few minutes to make my oatmeal at around 8:30 am and eat breakfast, and I don't keep a stash of other things to add in. So it's a simple breakfast but tasty enough and does the job. All those prepackaged oatmeal products, or the instant products are cardboard compared to the "real deal" oatmeal like I prepare. The prepackaged stuff needs all those extra flavors or sweetners because it has no natural taste or texture left.

I'm definitely not an oatmeal purist. I make my oatmeal with instant oatmeal. One packet of plain and one of cinnamon and sugar mixed together. Nothing added except boiling water.

I get the old fashioned oats (health food store) and cook it, then a dollop of butter, a little brown sugar, a tablespoon milk, and enjoy!

For me oatmeal should be eaten as simply as possible. I do add a small amount of sugar, under a 1/4 tsp, and usually brown sugar, and of course a small of amount of milk. One thing I do weird is that I don't mix the milk in, it just sits on top of the oatmeal. Occasionally, I do some minor touches, such as almonds, raisins. Never fresh fruit though on hot cereal.

Oh, and NEVER EVER the instant oatmeal from envelopes. I'd rather eat something else than those....

Milk, sugar, butter and a pinch of salt (when cooking) and brown sugar if I am feeling like it.

That is how my family always ate it... from a bowl, with a spoon!

My wasbands family eats it from a plate... with nothing but .... nothing. I can't do that.

Default Oatmeal

How do you cook oatmeal?

I ignore the package directions---no wonder they call it Gruel. Yuck.

The basics, I bring the water to a boil, add the old-fashioned oats, and stir constantly on high heat with a wooden spoon until it looks right. Two minutes or so, comes out al-dente, with a nice oaty flavor.

For the extra touch, I plump up some raisins in the boiling water first, and I top it with sour cream instead of milk, along with brown sugar if I have any.

But I'm famous among the children in my family. I think the only reason they look forward to seeing me is that I make my special Dutch Apple Oatmeal for breakfast. As follows:

Use apple juice instead of water, seasoned well with apple-pie type spices, and lots of raisins plumped in. Cook the oatmeal as described above. Serve topped with butter, brown sugar, and sour cream.

I buy the packages of plain instant oatmeal and add hot water and a bit of splenda. I might try the apple juice next time.

I cook mine with milk instead of water. Usually add some more milk and brown sugar to serve.

If you like it with sour cream you might also like to try it with a nice thick Greek yogurt. Make sure it's Greek yogurt like Fage brand - very different than Dannon and other American style yogurts.
