I buy the very large 42 oz. cannisters of plain generic Old Fashioned Oats and measure out half a cup of oats and a full cup of water. I cook them in the microwave for 4 minutes 44 seconds on half power. With a little cinnamon, a few drops of vanilla and a packet or two of Splenda type sweetener, and I am good to go for the morning.
One package lasts me a month and at $1.79 that's a bargain.
I get the instant stuff and microwave it. My favorite is the maple and brown sugar flavor.
I usually put a cup of water and a half cup of Quaker Oats and boil this while stirring for about 2 minutes. Sometimes I add raisins. I add nothing else. I drink cranberry apple juice with it or simply apple juice.
Otherwise, I too prefer maple and brown sugar instant.

You're a person of my heart---stingily efficient to save every nanosecond. Why press 5-0-0 when it is so easy to press 4-4-4, and what difference can 16 seconds make?
I thought I was the only person who had figured that out.

Call me lucky, I can press 5 and it will be minutes.
I make mine stove top. I cook some apples, and then I add oatmeal and additional water on top. I then turn it down really low, and let it cook for 30-45 minutes (stirring it occasionally). Cooking it a really long time makes the oats and apples so creamy; I really love it. After it's done cooking, I put it in a bowl, and then add cinnamon, walnuts (occasionally), and a mixture of regular milk and evaporated milk.
Stove top and Microwave. I put frozen blueberries, honey (pure, not the corn syrup crap) and milk in mine. Yummy!
