I think my grandma would get a kick out of her recipe going to another family especially one that her grandkids enjoyed so much and I think you will be very happy with them .I will send the recipe later on when I dig it out of the cookbook thanks .
1/2 c melted butter
1 c brown sugar
1/2 c molasses
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 c milk
2 1/2 c flour
Directions:
1 melt butter in microwave , stir in brown sugar and molasses ,add soda , salt , cinnamon and mix it all up .
Mix in lemon juice add 1/2 c of flour to your bowl ,slowly pour in milk little at a time and mix as you go
.add the rest of the flour and stir thoroughly until mixed . drop dough by tsp onto ungreased cookie sheet . Put 3 raisins on top of each cookie , 2 for the eyes and one for the mouth
. Bake 10 to 12 mins at 375.

I have no idea what a smiley face cookie tastes like and I don't want to know.
But for a good cookie that you can shape and frost, use a scotch shortbread recipe made with real butter. Do some testing. Sometimes you need to up the vanilla a little bit to get it to taste perfect.
There should be all sorts of recipes for that frosting on the web. I think it is just powdered sugar and milk, put it on and let it dry to a hard glaze.
