Saying 250K is "upper middle class" when not even 2% of people earn 250K is just absurd

Out of curiosity...where do you live because $85k per year is not a LOT of money in most major cities?

I live in midwest suburbs.

Check out these stats before you say outrageous things like "250K is middle class"

Household income in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Personal income in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

75% of people don't even make 50K for god's sake

I'm curious too... cause... in So Cal.. 85k a yr isn't really nothing to brag about... LOL.... you aren't living in a really nice house, you're kids are going to public school and you aren't driving the nicest cars......

Even if you're spouse makes 85k too... you still ain't ballin... LOl....

Sad when 170k isn't nothing to brag about... that barely pays for the Saab in the garage..... let alone the 400k house note..... the food, the daycare, the utilities......

You get the drift....

I never said 85K is "ballin" (whatever the hell that means) but that it's very comfortable upper middle or even upper class living in most areas.

So Cal is another area with a ridiculously high cost of living. You can't apply that example to the rest of the country. 75% of people don't even make 50+K in this country

Sure you can live "like a king" in the middle of a corn field but $250k per year is middle class if you happen to live anywhere in the country that is desireable (LA, Miami, NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, DC).

You can logically debunk the golddigger stigma all you want but I assure you it will always exist. People want it to exist. Sometimes logic just doesn't work, especially in the realm of relationships where there's emotions and feelings involved.

The numbers of $85k and $250k were picked because in the opening post I referenced another thread in which someone lied about his income. He had stated that he made $250k but really made $85k. But really the actual numbers are irrelevant. Just normalize the question to the area in which you live. You don't even need to have a specific number, you can simply say, "one guy makes considerably more than the other."

Incidentally, I do agree that income is relative to location as well as what all the earner is supporting. A family of four in Southern California on $85k is not making too many trips to Disneyland, that's for sure!

Oh, now that's a twist. Almost as if we self-impose it as a defensive mechanism, is that what you are saying? Or a convenient excuse if things don't turn out the way we'd like them to?

250K is middle class in Chicago?

http://www.city-data.com/income/inco...-Illinois.html

Average income in Chicago is around 40ish K. 250K is the top 4 or 5% in Chicago

Miami?

Miami - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"In 2009, the median income for a household in the city was $29,812, and the median income for a family was $33,814. The per capita income for the city was $19,846. About 21.7% of families and 26.3% of the population were below the poverty line."

Please stop talking about things you have no clue about. So many people in this thread who seem to be delusional. What's next? 500K is upper middle class?
