Because all sorts of people get cheated on. Attractive ones/ugly ones, Rich people poor people, people who are very clingy to their partner/people who are distant etc.

So my question is do you think there is any type of effective deterrent to cheating?

No. Since I don't think men we meant to be monogamous, nor is monogamy natural, then I think people are always going to cheat.

Some people do it, but not the majority.

These people(men and women) can be deterred by their moral values. They both can be deterred by the concern of potential harm to each other. I guess this is a little part of true love, to think about the other person first.

No. Monogamy is a social construct, and humans aren't naturally monogamous. Rather, there is a spectrum from highly promiscuous to highly monogamous, with most falling somewhere between the extremes. Throughout history, any attempt to enforce monogamy has failed, even if the penalty is death, and despite any religious or "moral" teachings. In the end, it is a choice one must make if one values the idealized concept.

I believe it is the attention that one gets from another that leads into the cheating episode..

How could that be stopped?

I don't think some people would ever think they would cheat on their partner, but once someone else gives them a certain attention, it goes too far.

Unless you have a healthy disrespect for law, morals, and ethics, the answer is no. If someone is going to do it, they are going to do it, and that is that. The best thing to do is to communicate with the other as honestly and as often as possible, even when it is awkward or painful.

Step 1: be attractive

Step 2: don't be unattractive

I don't think there is. You either have morals or you don't. Cheating is an internal issue, not an external one. No one makes you cheat, drives you cheat, it has nothing to do with SES, attractiveness, unattractiveness, location, age. This is strictly an internal flaw and choice you make all on your own.
