Yup. Half the spelling rules make no sense anyway. Who cares if "i" comes before "e" anyway and why would anyone think it has anything to do with my character if I forget the rule?

I'm a very poor speller because I just have other things on my mind. I'm a very deep thinker. I go way behond words and really don't worry about how a word is spelled. I'm sure I'm not alone given they have spell checkers now. If this weren't a common problem, a spell checker would be sold separately as an add on to Word because most people wouldn't need it.

I really don't worry about spelling or even grammar if the ideas are conveyed. I don't judge people by spelling. I'd rather judge them by the way they think.

BTW, I also never memorized my multiplication tables and, according to my tech writing professor in college, I have no idea what appostrophes are used for . I hold two masters degrees. One in engineering and one in educatoin. This mispeller is teaching your kids chemistry and physics . Oh the horror of it all....

I believe that character and Education are two entirely different things. Bad spellers are either, a) just bad spellers, like some people are bad at math or bad at cooking. b) lazy or don't don't care, which is fine. I don't care that I have a messy car... but my kids sure have another opinion about that. It has nothing to do with whether or not I am a good person or not. or C) didn't finish school or lacks a formal education. I also think age is relevant. Children in school today do more advanced spelling at an earlier age than I did 20-30 yrs ago... College also influeces spelling habits. As for me personally, I always keep a dictionary handy and look up words daily. I have to write a lot at my job and It wouldn't look professional if I misspelled words. I don't have the luxury of having spell-check, I just use a dictionary. I do have a personal thing about spelling correctly but it is just that, personal, and I don't judge character by that observation. PS - If I misspelled a word, please don't Misjudge me......

Does Spelling Indicate a Person's Character?

Uhm...no.

How silly, of course spelling does not indicate character. We all make mistakes in that area from time to time, some folks more than others.

I use a spell check on most of my documents just to catch the possible missed ones. I recommend it.

I am not too crazy about bad grammar though.

Hey, you all.

Did you guys noticed that? Is she saying that educated folks and average spellers are buttholes after all?

(in "refined" Elisa Doolittle's voice in My Fair Lady) Hmp. Poor character issues. If you ask me, I have to say that the girl is being arrogant telling herself that certain people have poor character. How did she know if they can spell or not or is this some silly assumption off the top of her head?]

What if there are people who are really good spellers and still are ***holes and *itches?

C'mon, easy off, everybody. It's not about being judgmental or having a nose up in the air.

Some are just saying that the laziness that goes with it is a turn-off. It helps to be able to spell and write to get somewhere in life...or get basic tasks accomplished. A lady I work with wanted her cover letter for a job checked. It was a disaster. I gladly overhauled it for her, WITHOUT passing judgment. She told me: "it reads so much better. Thank you."

I think that's the drift I got from the thread.

I'm sorry but, just wondering.....

is that being a bit of a perfectionist? If I forget to correct spelling errors, does that make me lazy even if I managed to miss a little spelling error?

Really? What part of "I have found a lot of people, that have character issues, usually have at least below average, or even poor, spelling," seems benign to you?

point being...I've been told from time to time, about my spelling on forums...I take offense/it hurts...as if the content of my post means nothing...to me, and perhaps I'm wrong, but the person is just looking for something to complain about...or to be condiscending...sometimes, putting others down makes themselves feel better about themselves.

My aunt was a writer, and told me once, when someone tears you apart, or looks for something to tear you apart, means, they are insecure and not very polite? (and I don't mean you)

I've got good common sense, and enjoy people, so spelling doesn't bother me, and I don't feel like I have anything to prove...other then I'm a really bad speller...LOL

I think there is so much more that a person has to offer, and disagree with you...but, that doesn't mean, that you don't have other outstanding qualities and potential just b/c we disagree?

What do you think?
I think that in this day and age of pervasive spell-checkers, that there is no need to have such a plethora of errors as you have in your post. When someone doesn't bother to at least try, then they're just lazy. Would you go to work with dirty clothes, unshowered, with hair uncombed and teeth unbrushed? Of course not, because it doesn't represent yourself well. It's the same thing with spelling -- if you can't be bothered to try, it makes a statement about yourself, and you can't ask employers or others to look past that.

Why would you assume that people are lazy? Why don't you just assume that MAYBE - just MAYBE - they have little time to spare, after all we *are* a rushed society - perhaps they are distracted in real time - and perhaps need to bolt out the door to do REALLY important stuff like buy groceries to feed their family, pay bills, take a phone call, take their kids to the Dentist, or maybe their spouse was kissing up their neck.........

You know what they say about those that assume, dontcha?

Not calling you an arse. Just saying - it's way too easy to think that someone has no life - and is sitting in front of their computer in their undies eating a bowl of Captain Crunch with absolutely nothing else to do. We live in a world of distractions where we prioritize. Online spelling is not exactly a priority to many. That same person may have a flawless resume.

I have posts out there where I "know" things were spelled wrong - and I chose to not go back and correct it - because either my son called me from the other room, or the phone rang for business, and I closed the laptop to tend to the more important and immediate issues in my life.
