I don't know how old the OP is, or how many working years he has left, but if he's worried about losing half of his retirement savings he should consider that prolonging the marriage will only give him less working years to make up any savings. Of course, paying child support will be a drain, too, but they are his children.
Also, if his wife took care of the children and household chores it has value. It's not cheap to hire someone to cook, clean, and watch children. He and the children all benefited from her being at home. It is unfortunate that she seems to have gone off the deep end with viral shedding, etc. Although even if that hadn't happened who is to say she wouldn't have wanted a divorce for other reasons.
