You know, being an IT person I've done the Internet dating thing a few times and it's always ended poorly. In trying to sound as modest as I can, I never have issues meeting men in "real life" but I liked the idea of wading through all of the people that I didn't share similar interests, beliefs, etc. I am extremely picky and I've only ever met up with 2 men: both of which turned into relationships. Unfortunately, both ended up putting on a good show for a few months and then became @sshats. Needless to say, I don't do it anymore.

LA86 - I like the idea too of kind of just looking through people, although I feel kind of disconnected. Like I'm shopping for a new shirt or something. Not very personal. Plus you're more likely to judge people based solely on looks. I'm pretty picky too, and I've never tried internet dating. I like being able to meet someone in person, and feel if there's anything there. As far as the @sshat thing goes - that can happen even with guys you've known for years. Know from experience.
Oh, I totally agree that they are everywhere... In my experiences, there just seem to be a lot of them online. BUT, try it and see what happens. Just use your head.

If you actually want to date, check out Plentyoffish.com or match.com. A site like hot-or-not is going to be more of a meat market. Plenty is free and it doesn't take long to fill out a profile. I've met my last 2 gf's through there.

My current beau and I met off POF. I did have to wade through some unpleasantries, but that is status quo for dating life anyway. I am very happy with my man and we consider that we will remain together; we both started out on the same page of wanting long-term.
If you haven't already been given the run-down on meeting people offline, just use your head: meet in public (at least the first time), be safe, etc.. My honey and I actually instant-messaged and talked on the phone for over a month before we actually physically met, and we couldn't be more happy.
Personally I don't know if I'd want to try online dating. I might just try it out of curiousity.
