I don't know why he doesn't. Maybe because he has never been fed anything except dry food on the floor, so he doesn't associate the counters with food. He, as a male, is pretty clueless. He has never had to hunt and all he does is lie around.
We had a female cat who knew the sound of a can opener and she got on the counter sometimes. Her favorite trick was to lick the butter if it was left out. She was a great hunter, too. I think maybe females have more instinct to get food anywhere, any time, but males aren't that way.

Cats aren't my favorite of pets, and I'm more inclined toward dog owners, but as long as the house and litter box(es) are kept in a sanitary state, it wouldn't have been a dealbreaker.

My main problem with house cats is the sanitary concerns of smells stemming from improperly attended-to litter boxes. Overall, I don't care much about pets in the house, as long as they are clean. The same goes for other pets, as well, but honestly, not much squicks me out like a gross litter box.

No, but it may be a real sticking point and incompatibility for some.

One of the first things my husband and I bonded over on our very first date was our mutual love of dogs.
