In the OT, there are a number of occassions where scripture talks about the Angel of the Lord.

Who is the Angel of the Lord?

Why have I missed this all these years?

Going strictly from memory (which may not be safe for me anymore) I think I have read that many scholars believe "the Angel of the Lord" to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ.

Keep in mind that in the Bible the term "angel" refers to the person's office, not their nature. "Angel" simply means "messenger." It defines what the person does. So "angel" is the job, like mail man or mechanic or cook.

In some cases in the Bible, "angel" can mean a human being, as in the Book of Revelation, where the author addresses the "angels" of the churches. He is speaking to the bishops and pastors of those churches.

Sometimes the angel in question is a non-human though. Their nature is a "spirit." Of these angels, we know of three named in the Bible: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

I, too, have heard some theologians speculate that "angel of the Lord" in the Old Testament was the Second Person of the Trinity. Could be. I don't know.

This is what I believe to be correct.

Thank you everyone. I've always heard God's messenger, but never found hard evidence to really know who this angel was, and found it strange that he was not named as other important angels who came to earth were.
