Charity donations to the poor have never been sufficient to meet the needs of all the poor. But, when we the people decide to write laws stipulating that some of our tax revenues will go to help the poor, that is when we the people are able to meet the needs of the poor. Maybe our definition of "poor" needs to be re-examined.

I'm not Christian, and I find the very notion of Jesus as a Republican fairly laughable.

Exactly. Christianity teaches that humans are sinners and fall short constantly. It only makes sense to make contributing to the safety nets for the poor and indigent mandatory. Heck we need governments just to make sure we don't go around stealing and killing each other, much less contribute an adequate amount to charity!

No sensible person would disagree with that. However, I think churches & individual Christians have in large part abdigated their responsibility, giving it over to the state.
