What do you think of the Mormon (LDS) church's recent acknowledgement that their policy against having black priests was wrong, in light of this original statement by their founding leader?

“Had I anything to do with the negro, I would confine them by strict law to their own species...”
- Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., January 2, 1845, History of the Church, v. 5, pp. 21-218

I've been told that the "personal opinion" of just about any past mormon leader is irrelevant. The LDS church seems to be trying to distance itself from some of the more outlandish comments of their early leaders.

The point is that their "prophet" was imperfect.

It is an example of a modern religion modifying its teachings to accommodate common sense.

I bet other religions have done the same thing.

Nothing wrong with keeping races pure. Mixing them only degrades both.

The quality of a person is not related to their race or features. This is a very shallow way to view people.
