The NT does not mention the marital status of Jesus. We assume he was single and probably chaste. Is the absence of information enough to conclude Jesus never married?

It wouldn't matter one way or the other to me. Whether He was married or not. I would say that He was single so as to dedicate Himself fully to the reason He came. So His focus was fully upon His people.

Yes. He advised against marriage for those who would devote themselves to God. That would obviously include himself.

I agree, it does not matter. But, why do we almost always assume Jesus was unmarried?

His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry."

Jesus Teaches on Celibacy

But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: 12 For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

Paul also favors celibacy.

Thanks!

So we deduct he was single? He could still preach celibacy while being married. Can we 100% certain Jesus was single?

Yes. The Bible mentions his mother, his mother's husband, and siblings, but zero hint of a wife. If he had been married it would have been worth at least a mention don't you think? We know that Peter was married and that Paul was not. God's only begotten son had no flesh and blood wife. His bride is the Church.

According to the Catholic Church we know Jesus was not married even if this was not clearly delineated in the NT. This was part of the oral Sacred Apostolic Tradition. Or the spreading of the news by word of mouth by the Apostolic Fathers.

If that were really the case, then why did he call Peter "The rock on whom I'll build my church," despite the fact that Peter was married? And, of course, there's the verse from Corinthians 1 9:5 that reads, "Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas?"

As far as Christ himself is concerned, no one really knows. Some biblical scholars point out that he is referred to as Rabbi. Given the convention of the time that rabbis were married, it's an interesting idea but far from conclusive.

To me, the question is both moot and a bit irrelevant. If Christ was married or not married, does it really affect His ministry one whit?
