"God" doesn't punish anyone.
Lord, what a notion.
What a projection ... it's all projection.
People punish themselves ... and each other.
They (we) do a really, really good job of it too.
And too often it's justified and/or rationalized in the name of whatever cherished "God".
It's a crime.
No.......God really does punish people. That humanistic notion that we just need to love ourselves is just not true.
Karma. The laws of Karma. We can change our ways, and take new paths. I have always believed that I should make up for any wrongdoing. Harming living things with pleasure would be the greatest transgression, in my opinion. Failing to "get saved" is not a bad thing.
God punishes no one. There are negative consequences for all failures. They are not punishments. Violate the law of gravity and it will have consequences . . . blaming it on our physics teacher as a punishment for being taught this law is absurd.
When we are not in harmony with God and the Christ conscienceness, we are the ones who will suffer until we are back in harmony. It could be when you err, ten years later or in the spirit world. You will ALWAYS reap what you sow. Always.
It's better here because of the diversity of people in one place. When in the spirit world, the Law of Attraction will keep you with like minded souls so it's harder to overcome that which you have been taught or the errors one does to the self and others that is not in harmony with God.

We could hit this ball back and forth forever.
Or "your" "God" might be a punishing thing ... that's a human construct in which you take part in because you accept that construct as some universal truth.
But it's just your "truth" and you share it with many others who participate in the same paradigm.
Which is fine ... it's your business but if you insist on imposing that paradigm / construct on others, that's "criminal" in my book ... you become a tool of the oppressor.
Anyone who has a belief system and doesn't recognize it as such is potentially harmful.
And it's punishing merely to hold that belief that "God punishes" ... and that's all it is ... a belief (you've been told it and you believe it).
And depending on what kind of person you are (one committed to doing no harm or not) that belief you hold can potentially justify / rationalize a tremendous amount of harmful behavior toward yourself and/or others.

nice post. you and i differ in some doctrinal beliefs no doubt (show me a pair of people that don't, and i'll show you a pair of people that have never bothered to think about it), but that doesn't mean much in the end, and your philosophy and ability to look at human nature are impressive.
in particular, i enjoyed and heartily agree with this:
Quote:
Anyone who has a belief system and doesn't recognize it as such is potentially harmful.
one of the few christian existentialists, paul tillich, wrote that many of the people that don't understand this concept are under a self-imposed ignorance because they cannot wrap their heads around the concept of them being wrong and there really being no eternal existence. he says that these people are afraid of a meaningless existence (in the sense that death ends everything), and that they are more often than not the ranks from which the violent, cruel, religious fanatics of the world are pulled.
makes sense too. otherwise, why would there be such a perceived need to become irrationally angry and resentful to the point of hatred and war with others simply because they have different creation stories and different holy books (or none at all)? it is repressed fear and ignorance and nothing more.
