I hear you, loud and clear. I am NOT moving out of this apartment until I find my dream home or until the building literally falls apart, whichever comes first.

I last moved myself almost two years ago, and just helped my girlfriend move in a few months ago. In both cases, I found that it was a HUGE help to give away TONS of stuff on Craigslist. For example, her dining table wouldn't be used since we already had one. We posted it in the "free" section of Craigslist, and a VERY thankful family with two young children (ages 3 and 5, IIRC) came and took it. They had been eating off a card table and couldn't afford a suitable replacement, so they were thrilled and very grateful to get hers. It was a very nice table that I'm sure we could have sold for a hundred bucks or so. But by giving it away, it ceased to be our problem four hours after the posting went up. Plus, good karma for helping a needy family.

Obviously everybody's situation is different, and not everybody should / can afford to give stuff away. But if you can, it will really save you a ton of hassle.

I hear you! After 15 years in the restaurant business I'm retiring (at least temporarily!) and closed my place on July 31st. I live on the premises and am moving to a small 2BR place which in no way can accommodate all the stuff I've accumulated over such a long period. Most of the major equipment has already been sold and a two-day yard sale next weekend should clear out much of the rest but I'm totally surrounded by what looks like the aftermath of a hurricane and sorting and packing seems such a daunting task at times!

Just do it all gradually, be ruthless about what you REALLY need and get rid of the rest. Make sure all your boxes are clearly marked with their contents so that when you reach your destination you can put the right boxes in the right rooms which makes things much easier.

I'm quite certain that as soon as the move has been effected, the only sign of my presence in the new place for at least two weeks is going to be SNORING as I recoup. I have four felines also making the move but, much to my amazement, they've so far not been put out at all about all the chaos, just simply curious and having fun supervising all the comings and goings ...

Good luck - it'll be all done before you know it!

Heck, we've moved 5 times in the last 6 years and are moving again at the end of the month. The past few moves have been very close by, but one a year ago was across country. Each time, I end up putting stuff up on freecycle, and give bags of stuff to charities.

And each time, though this is familiar territory, it is a stressful thing.

LOL - as a landlord and house flipper I am ALWAYS moving something. If not staging furniture, I'm moving myself, or a tenant.

We recently moved (evicted) a tenant and once we got the OK, my SO and I moved an entire 1 bedroom apartment out in THIRTY MINUTES into a storage unit. LOL

Everything - cooking stuff, furniture, bath. And we boxed it up nicely and didn't break or scratch anything!

Let me tell you, when you want a tenant out and he says OK, you don't waste a second!

I have a truck with an 8 foot bed, and a 12 foot enclosed cargo trailer as well as an appliance dolly and smaller dolly.

We keep plastic wrap on hand and wrap everything before moving. It reduced scratches. I also have piles of old blankets - be sure to pad everything! If you let anything rub together in transit it will be scratched or gouged.
