I suspect in the future we'll see more people living this way out of financial necessity. Even in situations where people think "I could never do that", if the need becomes great enough you find ways of making it work.

This week is the first timesince we had children 44 years ago that we have lived in the family home just my husband and I. One of my son's and his girlfriend and child just moved out. The girlfriend and child have been here almost 2 years and the son has been here 12 years after we asked him to move out. before that it was other children, with or without "partners" and children. Hopefully we can enjoy being just us for a bit.

However, I bought a Large house in WV that was cheap and cheap to live with the express idea of my youngest son and his family being able to live with us as both of us have health issues, my husbands being neuro dengenerative, and we will need live in help round that clock at some point.

So we will again be living multi generational.

I hope there will be more flexible zoning in places with oversized houses (although that definition is likely relative). Where I live in New England, there are few new houses over, say, 2500 sq.ft., but where land is more plentiful (South, West) there are what seem like huge houses for an average family. How about the old "apartment over the garage" for a single person who helps out or a returning-home grown son or daughter? So many areas won't zone for this as a "two-family" or there's an illegal apartment where any nosy neighbor can turn the owner in (and do).

I love the casita idea, or cottage in the yard. We could all benefit.

There are home builders who are jumping on this upcoming bandwagon. Communities will follow.

As the boomers age and their heirs have no chance at the successes that the boomers had there will be no choice left. The boomers will be the last generation of older with money.
