Did no one comment on this? Sheesh. $4500 net a month!!!!! Ay yi yi. When I retire - very soon - I will be living on approximately $1800 a month and feel lucky that I will have that!
Yes, I thought that was a pretty generous retirement income, muhself......Especially as I think the OP said he has no mortgage or car payments.
Lots of folks live on significantly less than that.
Not to cause more confusion but I think it may be cogent to this discussion that the "average" annual amount across the country for retiree income is $35,107.

Travelassie, no offense meant...but I am the OP and I did not even suggest an amount for my income. Nor did I say anything personal about a mortgage or car payment. I don't get why people are misreading (or not reading) my original post.
LookingatFL: we are looking real hard to Sarasota/bradenton area. We have been looking, researching since last year. There has been one bad hurricane in 10 years (Charlie). Tornados are not a problem, don't have the weather patterns and lift you get coming onto the plains from the mountains. Home prices are quite low compared, with good inventory.
As to mfg homes, if a hurricane comes and you are in a mfg home, you bail. That simple. You don't ride it out in one. However, there are 40 YO mfg homes. Also, if you are inland a distance, reduces the impact, but can still take one down.
East coast can and often does get hit, but the west coast seldom gets hit. Has to do with prevailing currents and wind.
If you are thinking about that area, I am headed down in3 weeks to look, will be able to give you some RE agent recommendations. If you are interested in a mfg, check out Colony Cove. It has about 2500 units in the development, and you can get a nice one for $15K often furnished.
Thank you. I lived in Orlando, FL for 20 years and traveled around all of Florida, so I'm pretty familiar with various cities. If I decide to return to Florida I would probably stay in the center of the state.

I don't believe Travelaisse meant to us "OP". The person with the $4500 per month to live on mentioned it was after taxes & medical. Maybe car payment too ???????????????
Read the link. It didn't answer the question I have. Is that annual average income a household number or an individual number?
Not sure if I'm reading you correctly, but 1st paragraph of this article says this?
Quote:
Nationwide, seniors are living off of a median household income of $35,107, roughly 57% of the median income of their younger counterparts ages 45 to 64, according to an analysis of 2011 U.S. Census Bureau data by Interest.com, a financial information website owned by Bankrate.com.
Ariadne,, thanks for pointing out my sloppy speed-reading. That figure does seem low for a household, doesn't it?
I've always thought that seniors who wind up single in retirement should do the roommate thing - like we did when we were free and breezy hipsters. Easier imagined than accomplished.
I honestly don't know, to me nonpoor isn't same as wealthy. What is in your mind or in collective mind?
