When we went to Vegas, hubby and I decided that we would gamble REAL money. So he took 20 bucks and played Blackjack and I took 20 dollars and played that game with the ball and spinning wheel that I always call baccarat, but it isn't baccarat.
FIVE MINUTES LATER -- we met back up and decided that wasn't very fun losing all that money.
The only thing there that didn't make me feel awful about throwing money away was this odd ball machine. It was a glass box, with several levels of mirrors all loaded with coins, mainly quarters, but you had to use quarters to play. There were paddles pushing the coins to the edges, which were raised, and it seemed tons of coins just balanced precariously on each level. There were several slots for you to insert a quarter and each slot shot the quarter differently... and you just KNEW that this would be the quarter that would cause all those moneys to fall... And sometimes they did....right down to the next level.... where they were balanced SO precariously.... yeah -- that one got me for about 5 bucks.... but it was real fun!
I did stick a nickel into a slot, pulled the lever and won 14 dollars... that was exciting!
But I think all in all, we've maybe lost 50 bucks gambling. I don't see the thrill, and people watching can be a little depressing...
Blackjack, Spanish 21 or Craps are about the best games for a casual player. For Blackjack and Spanish 21, just memorize the respective chart for basic play.
For craps, play the pass line and put down the most odds you can afford. For more action, place a come bet and put odds on that if it makes a point.
For all three, especially craps, google for free online simulators and practice.
Every senior center up here in NE has a casino day bus trip. My sister thinks I should go with her just for fun but not sure this is my thing. I imagine the food isn't my type either but maybe I ought to try this so I don't keep coming across as a stick-in-the-mud.
That is so true! My grandma's independent living community does at least one trip a month to mohegan. I go every few months maybe. Not to win, I just play black jack because I enjoy the game and atmosphere. Don't care much about winning or losing.
Gads, it's been a long time since I was in a casino. 10 years ago, before I had a house, I went every few months with a set amount. Once I had the house, it went into fixing it inside & out, a lot of plants & landscaping.
I may go again someday. I enjoyed it & put it into my entertainment budget & only took a certain amount , 50 if I felt flush, usually 20 though.
I've been trying to remember the last time I was in a casino. I know it's been over 10 years because I've been here that long and never gone. Before that? Who knows. Although, one place I lived I'd go once every couple of months with my cousin, mostly for dinner. Then we'd play the slots for a while. My limit was $40. When that was gone, so was I. The most I ever won, and took home, was $100 and I gave that to my niece and nephew for school clothes.
My ex boss won $12,000 at our local casino and my brother has had some good winnings as well. My luck has never run that way and I'm a Scrooge when it comes to my money!
When I go back east, on my return trip I schedule a couple hour layover at the Vegas Airport. I grab something to eat, walk around to stretch my legs and watch the people and play a few one armed bandits....a whopping 2-3 bucks...and I make sure they are the real ones where you have to pull the lever, because that's real fun.
I always liked those levers. Made you feel like you had 'some' control over the outcome. Didn't, of course, but it was a good thought. I won $20 at the Vegas airport years ago. lol

Thanks. I would love to play craps but am intimidated by the tables. I have a book that explains all the bets and strategy but did not realize there were online simulators. That's what I need to get comfortable (and maybe start with a slow table on a weekday afternoon on my next trip to Vegas).
ARBQ2015 - some Las Vegas casinos offer lessons on weekday mornings, and then open up a low limit table for those who attended the class. It's a great way to learn the game and the etiquette. Check with the pit boss for times.
When the "Last of the Mohican casino's" closed here in Las Vegas, that was the end of my gambling, 2X a year, when my penny jar filled up.
Up until 2 years ago, the Western Casino still had a whole array of old-fashioned penny machines, where you plunked in one or 5 pennies, at a time, and it was so much fun, seeing hundreds of pennies come down the chute, and you hands got all blackened, and if you rubbed your eyes, you'd get black even on your face!
I refuse to play these electronic penny or nickel machines, it's just not the same!
Nowadays, if I'm going to eat at a casino restaurant, I might just put a dollar bill into a machine, and when that doesn't pay off, I'm out of there!
