I have fibromyalgia and currently take medications that I really don't want to take. If MMJ would help my pain without risk of addiction, I would do it in a heartbeat...and I am a non-smoking, non-drinking, Southern, Bible-belt Christian. (though I have never thumped my Bible...why would I do that? LOL)
I am aware that MMJ is specially formulated to not contain the "high" inducing chemicals, only the pain-relieving ones. And hey, it all boils down to a bunch of chemicals, right?....which is what all medications are. Not sure it is even legal in my state yet, though. (not Arkansas)
From what I find, if you live in Arkansas, medical marijuana is permitted. The Medical Marijuana Amendment was approved Nov. 8, 2016. You're allowed up to 2.5 ounces per 14-day period. Check with the requirements. It's possible you might need a physician's diagnosis and recommendation to try and to obtain an ID permit card. It looks like the qualified conditions is pretty extensive, including fibromyalgia. Many medical marijuana dispensaries require patients to show a state medical marijuana permit card. 28 Legal Medical Marijuana States and DC - Medical Marijuana - ProCon.org
The fear of physical addiction to marijuana is a myth. It is however possible for some heavy tokers to become psychologically "addicted". Most people have no such problems though. While pharmaceutical pain-killing chemicals (medications) may help provide some pain relief, sometimes other side effects can be undesirable or severe, and sometimes certain medications don't help at all. MM might be helpful some some people, but not necessarily for all people. You may need to adjust the amounts, either more or less, to determine what works for you. Talk to your primary care physician about it.
Marijuana has a chemical property called THC. That's what tends to make a person feel high. For some patients, that might be what it takes to obtain relief for their particular condition. Not every person is the same. The other are chemicals called CBD. That does not get you stoned, but can be beneficial for some patients. The tough thing about marijuana with high levels of CBD is that you won't necessarily feel pain free right away, so it's easy to think it isn't doing the job.
Personally, I prefer lower THC levels and higher CBD levels. I don't need to use it all the time, and it works fine for me. I don't like smoking MM in a joint, pipe or water pipe. Too harsh for me. I use a vaporizer which produces a vapor without the ash particles.
I'd recommend choosing products from an MM dispensary. They often provide a wide variety of products. Check Google or other browsers for the location of MM dispensaries in or near your area.
Another thing you might consider trying are MM salves and lotions. To me, salves are too messy. The lotion works much better and no sticky mess. The lotion I use is high in THC and lower in CBD, but it works fine for me, and because it's a topical (applied to the skin) it doesn't make a person feel high at all. I can feel the pain relieving effects within a minute or so. Just gently rub it on.
I live in WA state but haven't actually stopped and shopped. We have noticed that the couple of shops we often pass don't seem very busy. I almost think maybe it isn't the good business it's supposed to be.
My husband has persistent bad back pain and I have wondered if it would help. But he is so proud of being straight laced that I have never even mentioned it to him. He also has Parkinson's and I would be a bit afraid of anything that might affect his balance.
I was wondering if there is any inspection of the merchandise like there is with fruits and vegetables. Is MJ grown organically? Is it washed before packaging, etc.?
If I were ever to try it, it would have to be in some form not smoked.
DW bought me some MJ cream/salve for my hands which have some arthritis pain. I tried it a couple of times but honestly I get more out of ibuprofen so haven't used the MJ any longer. It did not get me stoned or anything. I used to like smoking it 50 years ago but have no interest in doing that now.

I have some CBD oil and a few of the hard candies. Much better than sleeping pills. One drop and I get a great night's sleep. I probably use it once a week or so.
What forms does MMJ come in other than brownies and smoking? Can it be taken in a tablet?
I think CBD oil is the most common. Comes in a dropper bottle. My favorite are the hard candies. Sort of tastes like a Jolly Rancher with a little grass mixed in. It's added to all sorts of things. I might try the cookies some day.
