As a very small child? I wanted to be on a starship and visit other planets. I was very disappointed to learn that they didn't actually exist.
Older - I wanted to be an archaeologist or maybe an anthropologist who collected hill country songs and ethnic songs or studied the arc of Childe ballads to the "new world."
I too dreamed of being an archeologist once I got over the cowboy-fireman-astronaut stage. I imagined adventures with mummies & exotic tribes in far-off places. I came close but chose another path finally in university.
Looking back I think the big attraction to me was actually the notion of being far away from my parents who seemed to live on a different "frequency" than me, communication was strained at best & one way, & I became infatuated with being "somewhere else" & on my own very young. I eventually ended up for a long time working in video on locations all over.
When I was very young I wanted to be a cop because that's what my father was. At that age you don't notice a lot of variety in the world and tend to project the world 20 yrs in the future as just a later version of what things already are.
When I got older I wanted to be an opera singer. That's all I really wanted to do. Everything I have actually done in life was just because I wasn't an opera singer
An actress. I didn't pursue it because I THOUGHT that I had to move to NYC or L.A. to peruse that dream and I didn't want to live in either place. But as my niece (who is an actress) informed me that you don't have to live in NYC or L.A. There is something called "Regional Theatre" all over the U.S. Funny that I didn't realize that in my younger days. I did work summer stock as a teen-that was regional-but it was so close to NYC that most of the actors came up from the city for the summer. I STILL love the theatre.
As an adult, my dream job is being a restaurant critic for some newspaper/magazine. I get to go to restaurants and the newspaper/magazine will pay for my meals and I just write something up about my experience.
As a younger teenager, I wanted to venture out into the endless universe but it will never happen in my life time.
I realize that before I reach anything, I will die of old age out there in space.
Now my dream is to have my body/ashes sent out into outer space when I am gone... let me travel the galaxies, let me wander, let me be free.
