The middle of Highway 20 towards the top near I-80 on some off-grid property. The property has a reliable water source and legal but dilapidated mobile home on it. We've bought this property for less than 200K and fixed up the mobile home. Maybe adding onto it. We live in the snow which he needs to breathe but not far from the line where we need to drive to the store, doctors, church, etc

We'll fix up the mobile home, add an illegal small garage, outdoor kitchen, grow fruit trees and do some organic gardening

We belong to a gardening group, we attend bible study and church.

Happily living out our retirement years

Being one of only 2 places I've been to besides Miami...for a long time I dreamed of living in Las Vegas..Yes,I've been there in the summer also. Loved the energy, driving on those vast, empty mountain roads...the cool weather in the winter...the casinos of course...Though they were among the things that got me in trouble financially for life.

My sister and nephew lived there for 15 years(30 for my sister);until they moved to Olympia,Wash. for nephew's work. That was 10 years ago.
My nephew has sworn that he will take care of me when I can no longer take care of myself;which is approaching a lot faster than I thought it would. I really don't feel comfortable with that...he's got a family of his own(a SAHM and 2 kids)

My sister is 76 yrs old...so I can't really count on her for support in that aspect. She has been hinting that she wants to go back to Vegas...she says she's bored in Belfair,Wash., where she lives in subsidized housing. That will probably be a pipe dream...she lives on $900 SS a month and has had trouble covering her $650 rent. Besides,Washington state has the most generous social services in the country, whereas Nevada is one of the worst.

I was also in Granite Falls,Wash. for my nephew's wedding...that was nice!...In the winter it looks like a Christmas postcard.
But Washington state is basically unaffordable for someone who will live on Social Security alone, like I will.

So.none of that is happening for me. I will end my days in a Medicaid nursing home smelling other people's poop/urine,just like I did last year for 4 1/2 months.
I will keep playing the lotteries,of course.
The HUD Fair Market Rents are a little lower for Las Vegas than for Olympia, WA. Here are the links

Pro's
Your sister should save about $14-$20 per month on her Rent. She pays 30% of her income via HUD
Food costs in Las Vegas are likely cheaper than Olympia. It's a casino town. I am just guessing.

Transportation appears free for her right now and for the next 3 years due to a grant. I wasn't able to get bus prices easily online for Las Vegas Seniors.

Nevada is less generous regarding Food Stamps as you stated (welfare programs) but not sure if that would make much of a difference if she is located near a Soup Kitchen. I believe they have many more Soup Kitchens in Vegas than Olympia Washington. I'd try to compare their food banks too and any nearby churches who help the needy

To be uniquely placed near access to the best resources is probably more important than the slight cost of higher living in Las Vegas. Just my thoughts...thanks for listening

Edited to Add; If your sister is not doing good, you can become her caregiver and be paid for it thru a Medicaid Waiver in Nevada. Even if it is just taking her to get groceries when she cannot see well. the reason you want to do this is you can then move into her home, for free, as her caregiver if she is in Subsidized housing (like she is right now). Even if she only needs 10 minutes a day, it's a way to get free rent for yourself. You could be nice and give her a few hundred dollars for rent under the table. Just a thought...this might can be done in her current apartment in Washington too, I'd have to look. Nevada Subsidized housing doesn't charge a caregiver to live with their client, whether a relative or not.

If I get priced out of California, I'll just move back to Arizona or try some other cheaper place.

By happenstance, I was just thinking about this the other day -- with a twist.

At lunch a friend said let's buy lottery tickets because there was a large jackpot. So, that got a couple of us (all age 63) thinking...where would we live if we had THAT kind of absolutely life changing -- lifestyle changing money?

And taking the question seriously -- I really don't know the answer. I know this twist is only an amusing daydream. But so what. I like pondering stuff like this.

I like to wonder -- what IF I was Jeff Besos or Warren Buffet rich. Heck, what if I was just famous actor rich....Mitt Romey, or Bush family rich. Where would I actually want to live...IF I could truly live anywhere?

First I'm SINK.(single income no kids). Age 63.

- I have dear friends of many years in Florida -- but no family there.
- Would I want multiple houses? Not really. Sure I'd be able to afford them. But would I really want that?

And even if I stay in my general Philly area...would I move JUST to move up? I'm in a paid off townhouse now. Nothing special. Would it make sense to be THAT rich and stay here? Any move that I'd want make would take me farther from family. My brother lives literally across the street.

I suppose I could stay right here and travel all the time. So here would only basically end up being a home base. But is this the home base I'd want? It works now so why not?...(shoulder shrug)...

Then again, by the time I bless my three siblings with what I'd give them, who knows where they'd go. We're a very close family...maybe we'd buy/build a family compound like the Kennedys? IF not, still discuss it, so we'd end up near each other. With that kind of money we'd all be permanently retired and never work again. We'd all be able to ask 'where do we want to live?"

Anyway, it was nice musing about the OP's question...the ultimate answer to which is: I don't know

An interesting & amusing thought

But this brings out a bigger issue, that is how to handle money? For most of us, if we win the lottery the first gut instinct is to go buy that bigger house, fancy car, etc. We hear stories about many lottery jackpot winners go bankrupt a few years later, or young athletes/ movie stars, because they can't manage their money.

The book "Millionaires Next Door" shows your average Millionaires actually live a modest lifestyle. Most will not realize they're Millionaires just by looking at them or the car they drive. They usually have plain old boring jobs, or own non-sexy boring business that average everyday Joe needs, nothing sexy like a tech startup. They drive plainly everyday cars like Toyota/ Honda/ Chevy/ Ford. They don't wear jewelry or designer clothes.

So if I like where I live, I would stay for awhile until I figure out what my next move is. I want to spend more time with my spouse so maybe we go traveling more. I will most likely resign from my job since money is no longer a factor and my time is more valuable. It will bring me joy to be able to help financially to parents, siblings, or a relative, but I think they're doing well financially and they don't need help. Some young relatives can learn harsh lessons in life so I don't want to help. I do like my truck but it only gets 15 mpg. Now that money is not an issue, I can see myself driving it more and go on long distance rides.

Sadly to say, I have friends who're much more financially well off than I am, so I can see their lifestyle after retirement.

^ Yes. Right now, at 63, I've already been pondering where I'd live in retirement.
And -- with no money to make any REAL lifestyle changes -- or major location changes -- the answer is likely right here. Which is fine. More than fine.

I'll likely be well more than OK in retirement. But it's not like I could dream big or anything. Sure some friends have half-joked we'll end up as roommates, together like the TV show "The Golden Girls." But that's not thinking BIG!!

The "what if money were no object" twist...would open up the entire world of possibilities....because what IF money really was not an issue and never would be again. That's a game changer. The possible answer goes from being "realistic"...to not having to be realistic at all.
