We call it a cah over here! Did you check into RI excise tax and insurance rates yet? Think of those when you're doing your budget, no idea if they'll compare favorably to what you had to pay in San Diego.

Oh boy more taxes..yay! I have been playing around with google maps to get a gauge on where my necessities are located and it seems like Warwick is the common denominator. Is that a safe place to live?

Well, Warwick has good parts and bad parts. It's not so easy to just give you a general answer about its safety. Are you sure though about the commute from Warwick to Newport? I don't know if I'd want to do that every day if there's a way to avoid it.

If it is that bad, I guess I'll have to stick to Middletown. I live in SD and traffic is a way of life especially when all the ships are inport. I thought it would be about the same if not better in Rhode Island. Well I am leaving for Newport on Monday to scope places to live so I guess I will be able to try it out for myself.

Speaking of traffic how bad is the commute?

The commute to Newport from Warwick can be an issue. It really depends. Keep in mind that there might be some beach traffic in the summertime and bad road conditions in the winter time. We do get some snow here and there. Those are all things I would consider when it comes to choosing a place to live. Go hit up googlemaps or something equivalent and take a peek at how you can actually get to Newport from Warwick. There is a toll bridge involved unless you drive down there through Providence and the East Bay which would be rather silly. So on a good day your commute will probably be thirty minutes. Which doesn't sound so bad, does it?

Now add RI drivers and bad weather. And the potholes.

30 minutes is not too bad at all. I just need to be near the necessities.

Have you considered the toll over the Newport Bridge? Each way. You could probably find something closer if you took the time, and weighed the + an -. Have you looked in Wakefield, South Kingstown? Warwick to Npt could be worse, but there is a toll to consider too. These parts of RI aren't the sticks, no matter where you are the necessities are nearby.

I figure for now I am just gonna stick to Middleton for a couple of months and when I get to know the area better then I will find something a little more permanent. I don't think I will be able to get a good feel for all the areas in 4 days.

I sent this to someone else asking about Newport rentals (who after taking the time to get all the info together, never even said thanks or anything...

Anyway, hope it can be of some help to you:

Newport Rents | The Real Estate Rental Experts (Can search all of the areas on this site as they are all very close to base- check back frequently)
This one is nice! Newport Rents | The Real Estate Rental Experts

http://www.raveisrirentals.com/ (Of course check RI and parts of MA, but stay within lower Bristol county of MA) I live in Fall River, MA- It take me 26mins to get to Newport for instance. You will need to register for this site, but it is worth it.

Some apts from Fall River (a little further out, 26mins, but cheaper to live here- one reason why we choose here, plus I am just a few blocks from Bristol Community College)

HotPads.com - Real Estate, Apartments, Homes for Sale and for Rent, Rental Houses, Sublets, Roommates

You click on the little blds (they vary in size if they are homes or apts and you can find info. If you find an area you like and home you like that is a little out of your range, look at the contact info to the right and contact them to see if they will have any rentals in your price range during your move time frame)

Make sure anyone you contact to ask them about size of apartment, what utilities are covered by rent, if there gas and or oil along with electric, if they pay water/sewer/trash (I believe the landlords are required to pay sewer/water). Ask about parking space as well as if there is laundry room or space provided that is NOT paid laundry. If apartment, what amenities are included and if park area is near by. You also want to make sure that the rental is a YEAR round rental as there are lots of rentals listed online a lot that are just for summer or winter rentals but listing agent doesn't always mark it as such.

I was just offered a position in Newport and my position will start Nov 8th. Sounds ok right...well I just found out yesterday....and I live in San Diego. My brain is going a mile a minute trying to find an apartment online. So now I am moving at a frantic pace trying to find a decent place to live in 4 days.

I will be flying to Newport next week to find a new place. This is where my questions come in.

I have been looking on Craigslist and most of the apartments look really really old..wood paneling in my grandma's creepy basement old. That is not a look I am used to. I understand the East Coast history but that history does not include shag carpet. Can anyone tell me where the newer apartments are? I am a young professional (29) and I would like to live near the necessities. Grocery stores (I hear there are many Whole Food stores around yaaay), hospitals, shopping, transportation, nightlife (not a necessity but I need to meet new people). What areas should i concentrate on? I am looking for safe neighborhoods and those with other young professionals.

If it helps I am an African American female, I love diverse neighborhoods, with good eats and cultural happenings (it doesn't have to be of the black variety ). I dig yoga (so if you know a good studio let me know). My budget is no more than 1000. Any help would be super appreciated!
