Look at East Providence. You can get affordable prices and it's within your commute range.
Good luck.

The Edgewood section of Cranston is beautiful and is the 10-15 minute commute you mention from RIH. The northern edge of this section - the Washington Park neighborhood that straddles the Prov/Cranston line - is "transitional", although the southern end in Pawruxet Village is very pretty and historical. The schools are very good and the community is friendly and vibrant - do check out this area.

I was really hoping for a suburb and EP seems to be more of a city atmosphere. Is West Warwick nice. Everyone says its a more family oriented area.

WW is hit or miss, too, it's a mix of working class and middle class that bought nice homes cheap because of the lower class folks driving the value down. Not especially a high crime area, just more generic low lifes, particularly around Artic (where the police station is) and Crompton.
I'd look to Smithfield or Lincoln, Route 146 feeds straight into the city....
if you want apartment life then Cranston or Warwick would be fine, but the are classic suburbia.....and the schools are a bit better in Lincoln and Smithfield.

What do you think of the Westcott area in West Warwick. It's right off Providence St and down Hampton Ct then down Ball. Is this a ghetto or is a great family area?

I definitely would not call it a ghetto or even a bad neighborhood.
It's a working class, decent area.
I personally would look in other areas, like nearby Coventry. I think the area is better and the Coventry School system is definitely better.
If you were to keep going down Providence St. toward Cranston, the neighborhood is pretty nice, but there is a horrid stench coming from the sewage treatment plant nearby.
I honestly don't know how people tolerate that and how you could sell a house in that area.

East Greenwich is nice, direct center of the state.
I would suggest riliving.com for all the MLS listings in the state
