Good to know! It's always exciting to see neighborhoods revitalized after many years.
Here is a story with photos and video of the Church Hill School renovation that was completed in the last year. This building had originally been built as a school and was later used as the admin building for the school dept. It however had been vacant for some 20 years after the school dept moved its operations to the old Pawtucket Institution for Savings HQ diagonally across Park Place.
The Gately Building is another structure in this area that was converted to residences (14) in the last five years. It was originally built as a furniture store and it later housed a bank for decades. It had been vacant before being renovated and converted into a mixed use with first floor retail/restaurant and upper floor residences.
The Slater Cotton Mill is the largest mill conversion residential complex close to the new MBTA station under construction. It opened up back in 2012 and has helped spur further neighborhood conversions.
Another item of note in this area is the work being done by RIDOT to improve or replace all the sidewalks and street crossings in anticipation of the station's opening.
The City will also be adding bus and bike lanes to Exchange Street and Goff Avenue.
New Construction - Dexter Street (one block over from station)
6 Floors - Mixed Used Residential/Retail
214,000 SF including 16,700 for retail
150 Residential Units
66 enclosed parking spaces & 99 sub surface parking spaces
It appears that site preparation is now taking place for this project. The Dexter Street building which once housed Tarpey Meats is presently being demolished.
I am going to break the norm by posting something in this sub forum that is informative and not negative.
The station plan to date has had no parking as it includes just pick up and drop off for buses and cars. This article indicates that some other parking options are likely. The article states that RIDOT has acquired land for 200 spots that should be available upon the station's opening. It however does not elaborate on where it is. It also indicates that other private parking options may be on the horizon. 179 and 200 Conant Street are mentioned. They are however not even in sight of the station as they are a block away behind an old mill complex on Pine Street (see in photo above in background across the street from station) that is being renovated. These lots are located on a narrow street with poor access and egress routes.
