The building of this station might have something to do with the fact that the South Attleboro was allowed to deteriorate. It has been closed for a while now and Massachusetts's seems to be moving slowly with plans for it's rebuilding. A good amount of the passengers using that station are Rhode islanders so maybe Massachusetts feels there is no need to rush with their station.

South Attleboro was slated for a renovation even with the Pawtucket station in the works. The Providence line is by far the the busiest commuter rail line in the MBTA system and the existing four stations from Providence to Mansfield are all among the top stops outside Boston for passenger counts. There is great demand along this stretch.

The Valley Breeze identified the property that RIDOT purhcased for parking at the pawtucket station. It is a six acre lot right next to the station at the corner of Pine street and Goff Avenue. It is six acres and it will initially have 200 spaces with future expansion possibilities.

RIDOT purchase is for 6 acres, fully fixing train station parking problem

Yay, that’s what Pawtucket needs. More surface parking.

A COMMUTER train station needs parking. Would you prefer a parking garage that could cost upward of 10x the cost of a surface lot?

Yeah, I would.

One of my few peeves with the use of land in the area is the abundance of surface lots. I wish Providence would do away with the ones they have downtown. It's so very wasteful.

This is in Pawtucket, not the East Side of Providence. Different world from where you are.

And let's face it, Downtown Providence isn't exactly booming with commerce either. You want surface lots to go away, you better figure out how to increase the demand for vertical construction. Pretty hard sell when the city's iconic high rise might be coming down, and the Fane tower seems nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.

Busiest line, definitely, but with that the MBTA only added Sunday morning service during the last year.

I would prefer the mixed use development adjacent to the station that was proposed for this parcel, so people could access the station without cars. The plan all along was to have privately owned parking in garages near Pine and Conant Streets, which would have been shared with private developments. The spaces could have been used for the developments on nights and weekends when commuter demand is lower. Instead we will be spending millions more in public funds to get acres of surface parking that will be empty most of the time, on a parcel that is one of the most prime for development.

Geography lesson for out of staters - Pawtucket is adjacent to the East Side of Providence. And what exactly makes "the East Side of Providence" a "different world"? It isn't acres of surface parking. Places without acres of surface parking, like the East Side of Providence, downtown East Greenwich, Wickford Village, Wakefield, downtown Jamestown, and Portland, Maine tend to be really nice places where people want to go. It doesn't feel like a stretch to figure out how transform a current industrial wasteland into a desirable area next to a train station.
