I don't know what that means?

It's blanket fearmongering with NO firsthand nuance or real understanding of the state's urban neighborhoods & their differences. Some subtle, some not so subtle. This fearmongering, coming from rural Maine, simply means don't go into any minority/majority neighborhoods in Rhode Island. They are all crime infested, dangerous places. Be very ascared!

I believe it means watch your backside. 6 oclock on a timepiece. It is something said by people that think westerns is real life. You know, the people that watch TV and movies all the time and believe it reflects reality.

What's perhaps even SCARIER than the escalating violence in the city of Providence, is how some or our forum members prefer to brush it under the rug as though it doesn't exist. ZERO interest in change. It's been said that complacency is our greatest danger, and it's RAMPANT among the regulars here.

Summer has just barely (or not even) started. Providence has already seen eight murders (compared to zero this time last year), 29 people shot, and 11 shot over the past few days (one fatally). The homicidal ATVs/dirtbikes are already out in full force, and it's only a matter of time before the all-night fireworks and more people getting gunned down on the streets of Olneyville and South Providence. It's going to be a long long summer, and Providence has never been so out of control. HOW DARE YOU use this to race bait, and exploit this as a race issue. Really, how can one go any lower?

Buddy two people were just shot on Camp St. in broad daylight, while kids were outside playing! There was a massive gang to gang shootout on Carolina Ave., where bullets went through the walls of a neighboring house. The violence has also carried over to nearby Pawtucket. You think these animals are worried about innocent "you" ending up in their crossfire??? WAKE UP and think again.

Maybe people that live elsewhere are shaking in their skivvies.. They're not relevant, of course.
"Such a safe city"...

Apparently these folks think otherwise, and unlike "some" people prefer not to bury their heads in the sand.

Again, tell that to the family of the young man shot to death in Olneyville. Tell that to the 8 people shot (3 critically) in South Providence last week. Tell that to the mothers who's kids witnessed the two (fathers?) being shot in broad daylight in front of the park.

We have our regular forum deniers living in Jamestown and tony Wayland Square (the most affluent neighborhood in the city), and I find this downplaying of tragedy...just reprehensible. Great that "they" feel "safe".

Well said.

Meanwhile, we have six 2020 advocates of Defunding the Police on the Providence City Council who have either completely reversed course - or who are now too embarrassed to comment on their position from just last year:

Not well said at all. We know exactly why there is an uptick. It was predicted by criminologists and predictive crime analysts at the outset of the shutdown (even a scant review of the journals show this). What was needed to prevent it was also covered. We, as a conservative society, chose not to even scratch the service. Our society accepted this brief, but tragic, result instead of providing the resources to prevent it. It isn't complacency. Most of here (the people that actually live here) would have preferred us not to. But, there is little we can do in the immediate run to change it. It is a long term political battle to reverse the course of a conservative country taking a sharp turn to the right over the past 50 years.

Bingo. Now living with the effects of an under resourced, understaffed police department; it would be impossible to defend starving them anymore while maintaining any sort of credibility to the voters.

So now you're admitting that there IS a problem? If so, that's an important step #1.

This is true since the cities with the largest increases in violence are all run by Democrats and at least flirted with defunding, if not outright defunded, the Police. (Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Seattle, Portland etc.)

You don't see this in Republican controlled cities such as San Diego and Dallas-Fort Worth.

Meanwhile, Europe had shutdowns every bit as severe as New York City, but did not witness the uptick in violence of any sort.

You have more energy than I. Sometimes it's best to just let the right wingers trip over each other agreeing with themselves. It requires less effort, because they dig their own holes. And, do it with such righteous indignation when called out.
