I don't think it will be a culture shock at all, honestly. City of Richmond has a "Brooklyn-y vibe, suburbs are like Long Island suburbs. It's not particularly southern, and is full of people from the northeast now. For good reason (I'm one of them)

In my opinion, Richmond doesn't have much of a hip hop scene(I could be wrong though). There are a lot of blacks here, the city is very segregated and there isn't a lot of mixing. There are a couple of clubs/lounges downtown that play a lot of hip-hop, but they seem to be shrinking. There's one really good lounge on Main St. that does a variety of hip-hip/soul/rnb. If there is a hip-hop scene, then it's probably really underground. Downtown RVA, in my opinion has more of a hipster vibe than anything. If you visit, you'll probably pick up on it as well as notice the divisions across the city.

Depends on the neighborhood. Say $700-900 in the city, not sure of suburbs

Downtown is kinda quite. Shockoe and Carytown have stuff going on though. Richmond's a small city. More like a busy town really. I think what hurts it is that the public transit is a joke, no trains so the people that really live in "the city" are confined more.

It depends what you call downtown. The area with the offices is quiet, but many people in the burbs would also describe fan/museum/shockoe as downtown, and they have a fair bit of social life
